Are you feeling overwhelmed, unappreciated, or unacknowledged at work or in your relationships? Maybe you say “yes” when asked to do something only to resent it and have difficulty setting boundaries. At home, you might feel like you can’t get anything right. You don’t understand why you can’t seem to “do” relationships and what it is about you that’s the problem, but you keep running into the same problem, so you figure it must be you. You get anxious or tense going home, not knowing if your partner will be happy to see you or upset with you for something. If this sounds familiar, I can help.

I believe that you should do you. I also think that you should do the least anxious, least depressed, least traumatized and least isolated version of you that you can do. Reaching out for counselling can be really nerve-racking. It is also hard to admit that there is something in your life that might not be working quite right. My hopes are that you can make the changes that you want to make, and I'm hoping that I can support you to do it.

I, Nancy Aguirre, focus my practice on trauma because stressful life changes, neglect, abandonment, emotional/physical/sexual childhood abuse, rejection, exploitation, incest or family violence could result in experiencing distorted perceptions, emotions, beliefs and meanings about the self and life. Trauma freezes the traumatic experience in the nervous system creating unhelpful thinking, and negative self-assessment. These conditions can affect your capacity to tolerate and adapt to life's ups and downs; break old patterns that hold you back; avoid engaging in risky behaviours; and re-enacting your past traumas over and over.

If we all could have the option to be supported and heard with our struggles, to be connected and cared for, perhaps our ability to move through them and towards our goals would be different. What is it you wish to shift, where would your life be right now? How can I help you get there? If you are a victim of crime you may be eligible for counselling through CVAP. I am an approved CVAP counsellor.

Through both my work as a therapist and my own life, I've often found myself in awe the innate human capacity to heal. And the more I do this work, the more in awe I am at how so much of healing begins with no longer being alone in hard things. In my therapeutic work I've witnessed the incredible resilience and transformation that can emerge when a safe space is held for one's story and experience. I continue to stand in awe of that resilience.

Sex doesn't have to be a chore. It doesn't have to be another thing to scratch off your weekly To-Do List. Is it run of the mill, get it done and move on? Or is it a straight up “don't touch me, I don’t have time for this crap?”. However, your partner keeps saying that sex needs to be a priority in your relationship, or they'll be forced to leave. Or they would like to explore an open relationship. Lingerie, sex toys and endless research hasn’t changed anything and in fact you feel worse than you did before. You still lack any connection and safety in your relationship, which is really what you want, (other than an equal workload).

My practice is person-centered, strength-based, trauma informed. I think that each person coming to therapy is unique. Each person attempts to do the best possible with the resources available. Each person has wisdom, creativity, and strength, and is the authority in their life. Doing counselling means providing a safer space for you to tell your story. And it is a space for us to have conversations and to work together.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
