Let’s talk. Something has changed for you. It's the one thing that is guaranteed, things will change. You are likely either struggling with a change in circumstances or looking to make a change. Families change, jobs change, bodies change, relationships change, we age and experience change and mental health can change. Being able to adapt to change is one of the predictors of a happy life. It sounds simple but often it is not. Having someone to partner with to navigate the difficult changes you are experiencing can be very helpful.

Life not feeling right, something is just not fitting, or working, relationships feels on edge or unavailable. There is a large stigma around therapy and mental health and it is saddening as it keeps too many people away from a trained ear that can help untangle and heal those things we carry that are in our way. You know, procrastination, or listening to our partner, or getting that promotion at work, or understanding why your team isn't performing and thriving. Perhaps life just isn't making sense in general. Or we feel that we just don't fit and no one can possibly understand. Help is here.

I enjoy working with adults who want to make a change in their life. The change might be to lessen stress or anxiety, build self awareness or develop new tools in relationships. Therapy offers a rare opportunity to have life changing conversations and being a part of that is very exciting.

Human beings experience severe life stressors sometimes, and when they do it is not uncommon for their lives to unravel. I have a passion for helping people, who are experiencing difficulties, strengthen their relationships with themselves and others, so they can once again live purposeful, joy-filled lives, while still honouring their past.

Life can be challenging and although we are often able to cope with the difficulties that come our way, there are times when we can become overwhelmed with our thoughts and emotions. An issue may arise that feels too difficult to manage on our own. I provide a safe, supportive, non-judgmental space for you to explore whatever issues have brought you to seek support. I will help you move forward with clarity, confidence, and self-acceptance. It is perfectly normal to reach out for help. We will work together to meet your goals and find solutions that work for you. As a trauma informed therapist, I offer EMDR therapy.

Before I try to impress you with credentials, accomplishments and experience, I want to introduce myself on a personal level. I love change. I love helping people create their change. I am passionate about seeing people make good decisions from well thought out options and choices. Helping people see the same, sometimes long term, problem in a different light or from a different angle is exciting for me. New, different and out of the ordinary usually leads to feeling, thinking and acting “another way”. When people stop doing what does not work or make adjustments of any size and level, then improvement is inevitable.

Dr. Cheryl Bucar Having experienced personal and work related loss, I have learned that recovery from the trauma of loss and change is a process. In many situations such as a death or divorce the individual is able to label the loss and associated feelings as grief. Often in an organizational context, individuals do not think that the work related change as loss which can trigger profound feelings of grief. Understanding organizational loss in this context, normalizing the feelings that go with this type of change allows the integration of this knowing into my group and individual counselling work.

Reality Therapy Counsellors

Is reality therapy evidence-based?

Reality therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioural or acceptance and commitment therapies. However, some research does indicate that reality therapy might be helpful for people with addiction, and may be effective in treating social anxiety in young people.

How long does reality therapy last?

Reality therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Reality therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of reality therapy long after treatment has ended.

Does reality therapy work?

Reality therapy can help a person manage concerns such as eating disorders, addiction, substance use, anxiety, phobias, and relationship difficulties. This type of therapy encourages a person to be accountable for their behaviours. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure. Reality therapy can be useful in one-on-one therapy or in group sessions. This method may be used with children, families, and adults.

What are the limitations of reality therapy?

This therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the therapist focuses on choices made by the individual in the present day. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over others. This format may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every client.
