Whatever trauma, attachment injury, addictive habit, relationship struggle, mental health issue, significant loss, or challenging life event we face, there is always a way through.
My name is Vistara. I'm a Registered Psychologist and have been working in the field therapy for over 25 years. I work with a wide variety of clients, age groups, cultural backgrounds, gender identities, and personal stories. I work with all ages and specialize in play therapy with children and working with adolescents. I also have a great deal of experience working with Indigenous clients and enjoy supervising provisional psychologists. Each person is different so I am always adjusting my approach and bringing warmth, honesty, openness, humour, intelligence, creative problem-solving, and a fresh perspective to every session.

Climate Change! Wildfire. Smoke. Drought. Heat domes. Polar vortexes. All, just this year. Loss. Grief - or anxiety or depression or despair or numbness or fear or rage or powerlessness. And more. Even strained relationships. These are just some of the very real consequences of climate change, and I am trained to help you cope with them.

Couselling is a very individual and private experience. Sometimes people come to a therapist to overcome emotional pain or discomfort they are experiencing; sometimes they come because they want to resolve some inner conflict; and sometimes they come just because they want to become a better person. I try to match my skills with your needs and work sensitively with you to sort out what it is that brought you to me. I use a variety of therapeutic tools in a transparent way. I work with couples and individuals, both men and women.

Connection is a deep bond in which you develop awareness between yourself and the external world. Through this awareness, your identity as well as the ability to comprehend and communicate with others evolves. As you continue to develop and make more meaningful connections, the more grounded you may feel, in who you are and how you interact with the world. However, there are many of you that have experienced unhealthy or toxic connections with yourself or others. As a result, you may feel like disconnecting and withdrawing is the safest decision to make.

I work with children, teens, adults and couples facing life transitions, coping problems or mental health concerns. Depression and anxiety is very common, but I also work with loss, health concerns and family problems.Therapy is about change, but it is not about changing who we are. The person we are meant to be has been here all along. Sometimes we need help to reconnect. I work with my clients to explore patterns of behavior and thought that can keep us in small and narrow places, and to reconnect to our wiser, balanced and more joyful self.

Counseling services in: Trauma, Addictions, Grief and Loss, Suicide, Depression, Anxiety, and Personality Disorders.
20 years ago I began work in mental health as respite care. I later completed my professional goals of becoming a psychologist. Today my focus is Trauma and Addictions with youth and adults and experience with Veterans and First Responders. From the moment we are born we search for connection, love, and a sense of belonging. Growing up, in life this journey can be fraught with struggle, trauma, pain, and loss. But there is a silver lining. Amidst adversity we find courage and authenticity. We can find acceptance and the understanding of self compassion and empathy, that leads into true connection with ourselves and others.

My aim is to help clients live a life full of meaning, connection, purpose, and vitality. Working in the Edmonton community for over 15 years, I specialize in trauma, burnout, and grief, but provide services for a wide range of concerns. As a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) with training in Hakomi Therapy, I honour the mind-body connection and primarily use somatic/body-oriented approaches to healing. I believe that in order to achieve true lasting change, we must work with the body, as the body is where we store our unprocessed emotions, core wounds, and traumas. NOTE: Services provided in English only.

Grief Counsellors

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
