Couselling is a very individual and private experience. Sometimes people come to a therapist to overcome emotional pain or discomfort they are experiencing; sometimes they come because they want to resolve some inner conflict; and sometimes they come just because they want to become a better person. I try to match my skills with your needs and work sensitively with you to sort out what it is that brought you to me. I use a variety of therapeutic tools in a transparent way. I work with couples and individuals, both men and women.

I blend cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment (ACT), stages of change theory and EMDR with a mature, common sense and sometime humourous approach.
Feeling stuck? Over it? Ready to focus on wellness and well-being in your life? If you are looking for a safe, compassionate, accepting space to explore historical and present day troubles and concerns this could be it. I have had the honour of accompanying people on their journey to wellness for over 30 years, and am always inspired by the strength and resilience of the human spirit. My work has taken me to a number of different settings, including residential treatment centers for behavioural and emotional difficulties in children and addictions in young adults, First Nations communities, schools and private practice.

My practice incorporates a variety of evidence-based therapies, including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: To help identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns.
Many individuals grappling with mental health challenges—such as depression, anxiety, and stress—often experience feelings of embarrassment and stigma. Those facing issues like domestic violence, relationship conflicts, addiction, suicidal thoughts, or anger management may feel alone and uncertain about where to turn for support.

I draw from areas including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy ( CBT), Narrative Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy.
My passion for working with children and adolescents comes from my background in Elementary Education. As long as I can remember I have always enjoyed working with this population and it has been a privilege to be able to apply my previous knowledge to support development and growth in the therapeutic space. A strong collaboration between myself, my client, supportive family members and other professionals is important to me. I call my office the “no judgment zone” where we are able to feel comfortable exploring various challenges and working towards finding viable solutions.

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) Counsellors

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?

Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophising or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
