My goal is to create a space where each client feels comfortable showing up just as they are to explore whatever struggles they are facing without judgement.
I have had the privilege of providing mental health support in a variety of capacities since 2013, including crisis management, advocacy, and community and private practice counselling. My focus is on helping clients identify their unique strengths to gain insight into their emotions and conquer unhelpful behaviour or thought patterns that no longer serve them.

Taking the step to accessing support can be fraught with fear and shame.
20 years ago I began work in mental health as respite care. I later completed my professional goals of becoming a psychologist. Today my focus is Trauma and Addictions with youth and adults and experience with Veterans and First Responders. From the moment we are born we search for connection, love, and a sense of belonging. Growing up, in life this journey can be fraught with struggle, trauma, pain, and loss. But there is a silver lining. Amidst adversity we find courage and authenticity. We can find acceptance and the understanding of self compassion and empathy, that leads into true connection with ourselves and others.

When depression, anxiety, shame, and/or trauma influences the way we speak, think, and act, we are robbed of our own story telling rights.
I focus primarily on helping men of all ages heal and revitalize their relationships. Of all the relationships we maintain, the most important one is with ourselves. Through our own inner dialogue of feelings and thoughts we read and tell our own story. I believe this awareness of how feelings and thoughts manifest in our body and minds is at the heart of counselling and the human condition. Emotions get stored in our body and have a history. In the space we share, I will provide a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for you to tell your story, and to write the next chapter in your life.

My clients tell me that they can experience peace, joy, and gratitude again.
"I just want to feel a sense of peace again. I haven't felt joy for too long. I don't know why I feel sad and angry all the time." These are statements my clients often say to me when I am learning about them. In womanhood, there are complex reasons why women struggle. I look at areas like work, intimate partnership/s, friendships, early childhood experiences, female biology, the relationship with the self, and the relationship with spirituality (how to make life meaningful) to help untangle the emotional web women feel stuck in. I gently teach women how to begin the process of healing by looking within.

This is my private practice outside my full-time job as a therapist in the employee and family assistance program.
Quite often, we manage our biggest challenges with strength and confidence. And yet, there are times when we need an outside perspective that provides clarity, hope, and courage. Each individual has unique strengths and qualities, and my job is to help you connect with the inner strength that makes you resilient and prompts fruitful actions. I have thirteen years of experience helping individuals with depression, anxiety, stress, mood disorders, marital conflicts, workplace conflicts, and other issues. I have two Master's degrees, one in Social Work and the other in Special Education/Education Psychology.

I have diverse experience working with a variety of clientele, including first responders (Edmonton Police/Fire, RCMP) and their families, Veterans, and 14 years working specifically with serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces at the GMH/Operational Trauma and Stress Support Centre.
Life can be difficult. Trying to address these difficulties ourselves may feel overwhelming. I support the individuals I meet by working collaboratively with them in a non-judgmental, supportive environment where goals can be established, and movement towards positive change can occur regardless of where one might be in the change process. I believe in highlighting strengths, and empowering clients to achieve therapy goals. I respect how each person's needs within therapy are unique, so a primary focus of mine is the development of a meaningful therapeutic relationship so I can clearly understand and support those unique needs.

My role is to provide an objective perspective, to ask different questions, to help the client become unstuck, and help them move forward, in a positive manner.
Life can sometimes be a bit of a handful. Feelings of stress, overwhelm, and/or maybe just not knowing where to turn or what to do next. Often those times of challenge are our greatest growth, but it is difficult to see the opportunity for growth at the time. Sometimes just talking about those challenges, can help one gain perspective and develop a plan forward. My goal in therapy is to provide my clients with an objective perspective to see their problems or challenges differently, perhaps less daunting, helping them find a way forward. Life happens to all of us. I believe people are more capable than they realize.

Depression Counsellors

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
