I am also knowledgable of different cultures and provide services through a multicultural lens.
I am a Registered Psychologist in good standing with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP). I work from a client-centred approach where I believe that the best therapeutic results come from a collaborative approach between client and therapist. I believe that my role is to provide a supportive safe space where your voice is heard and your goals take centre stage. My commitment is to help you not just cope, but to thrive. Together, we will create realistic goals and map out a unique path to achieve them. When the right therapeutic fit is found, you may be surprised at how quickly you begin to feel meaningful change.

Life transitions, daily stressors, trauma, and mental illnesses can negatively influence the way we think, feel, and behave. These factors can cause us to feel "stuck" in old habits and patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that no longer serve us. I recognize that when we are stuck, it is difficult to make that first step towards change and reach out for support. Hence, I acknowledge you for making the first step into finding what works best for you. I understand that you want to take charge of your mental and emotional pain so that you can unlock your utmost potential.

I adopt a multicultural approach in my sessions as this experience has given me insight into what children and families face when moving to a different country such as struggles with cultural issues and racism.
I work with children, youth and immigrant women. My goal is to support your child, alongside yourself as the parent or caregiver, through a holistic and whole-person approach to meet the unique needs of the individual or family system. I specialize in working with children aged 3-17 experiencing a range of social, emotional, and behavioural concerns such as anxiety, autism, attachment issues, self-esteem, ADHD, oppositional defiance, depression, OCD, peer relationships, among others. I provide therapy often using a play based modality. I also do full psychological assessments including assessments for ADHD, Behviour and Autism.

I have been an educator and school counselor for the past 30 years and I am cognizant of the struggles that some children or youth experience in the regular school system. I work with anxiety, addiction (substance use) and chronic pain. Sometimes the little things become too much and you find you're overreacting or panicking. Maybe you can't get a situation out of your head and you're overthinking or stressed about it. Maybe you tired of numbing the pain or avoiding your problems cause it isn't helping. Sometimes our motivation is to stop passing on unhealthy patterns to our kids. Maybe you want to control your emotions so they don't control you. If you want to work on the roots of addiction and the stress and anxiety that is always brewing below the surface of chronic pain, we could be a fit.

Multicultural Counsellors

What type of therapy is multicultural therapy?

Multicultural therapy is not tied to any specific therapy; rather, it is an overarching approach to therapy that aims to acknowledge and address the influence that factors like race, gender identity, and cultural background can have on someone’s life. Multicultural approaches can be applied to CBT, psychodynamic therapy, and others, and can be practiced with individuals, couples, families, or groups.

What can I expect from multicultural therapy?

Multicultural counselling should be tailored to the client’s unique identity and cultural needs. Such approaches often prioritise the building of trust so that the client feels comfortable exploring various aspects of their identity and any challenges caused by mismatches between their identity and the dominant culture. Beyond that, the format and timeline of therapy will be heavily influenced by the therapist’s preferred therapy approach and the specific problems for which the client sought therapy.

Can multicultural therapy help treat trauma?

Yes. Cultural factors such as racial background, gender identity and or sexuality, and immigration or refugee status can influence both whether someone experiences trauma and how they cope afterward. Multicultural approaches to trauma-informed care will be aware of these influences, helping the client recognise how their response to trauma may be shaped by their cultural background and identify coping mechanisms that take their identity into account.

What are the benefits of seeing a multicultural therapist?

Members of minority groups who seek therapy are sometimes frustrated by providers who don’t understand their cultural background or dismiss the ways in which race, gender, or other facets of their identity influence their lived experience. Seeing a multicultural therapist can help these clients feel seen, understood, and able to develop solutions to life challenges that take their upbringing, beliefs, and past experiences into account.
