Most of us experience times of struggle and uncertainty in life and we do our best to navigate these difficult and complex situations. Often we are successful in overcoming these obstacles, but sometimes they leave us with feelings of unease and discomfort as we try to maintain a sense of stability. Feeling alone while we suffer through these stages of life can be overwhelming.

Are you looking to speak with someone about your current struggles? Want someone who is caring, compassionate, and non-judgemental, maybe even someone who will challenge you to meet your goals in counselling and to think about things with a different perspective? Perhaps someone to help guide you out of the pain you are experiencing? I believe counselling is a collaborative relationship, it's about creating change, and it's about self-exploration. I also believe the counselling relationship is meant to honour you, guide you, and empower you. It is important to find a counsellor that "fits" with you!

With a holistic perspective, I aim to integrate mind, body, and spirit in our work, recognizing that true healing often requires addressing multiple dimensions of a person's life. I explore the past to uncover patterns and to understand how these may shape the present. I also place equal importance on the here-and-now, empowering clients to connect with their immediate experience. I believe deeply in the importance of meeting clients where they are. My practice is rooted in the understanding that every individual has a unique story and healing process, which I respect and honour with compassion and curiosity

We often heal best in relationship, and so my primary goal is to create a space where we can work together using what we have both learned along our journey. I began my trauma care journey 35 years ago after surving the San Francisco earthquake, working with emergency response teams and teaching disaster psychology. In 1998, I completed my graduate degree in counselling psychology with an emphasis in health and began advocating for teens with ADHD. In 2018 I licensed in Alberta as a provisional psychologist and have been in private practice ever since.

I work with children, teens, adults, couples, and families. As a Certified Synergetic Play Therapist, I am passionate about helping kids navigate their way in the world. I can also help with eating disorders, chronic pain and illness, trauma, grief, relationships, separation and divorce, adoption, self-esteem, developmental challenges, sports performance, and other mental health challenges. As well, I am trained in EMDR and Gottman Method for couples. Although there is no manual or script to navigate one’s life, there are certainly opportunities for curiosity and self-awareness to deal with feelings, thoughts, and challenges.

Whether you’re having difficulties with stress, depression, a relationship, a past experience, a decision, or just want to understand yourself better, I may be able to help. I provide a safe, supportive place where we can explore your concerns and your goals. I believe that individuals are unique, and that there is no single approach that is the 'correct' one for everyone. I match my work to you and your unique style and needs. I also understand that we have a diversity of aspects - thoughts, feelings, beliefs, behaviors, relations, histories, goals - and that these cannot be meaningfully separated in therapy any more than in life.

Life can bring unexpected challenges, changes, and loss. I am committed to sitting with you where you are today. With grief, anxiety, self-doubt, confusion, stress in relationships, or parenting struggles. We will work together to increase awareness and to identify and change old patterns, shift emotions and experiences held in your body, honour personal boundaries, and develop self-compassion. A significant loss at the age of 29 led me on a path to pursue grad school and yoga teacher training, before starting in private practice in 2016. I have worked in the counselling field for over 20 years.

Change is a part of every life. When people look for a psychologist, they often need support to create the change they want in their lives or adjust to changes beyond their control. In our work together, we will build a collaborative working relationship that responds to your needs and strengths– aligning you with the goals, values, and actions that will carry you through change. While we may spend some time understanding your past, our work will mainly be focused on building health in the present and moving you toward the future you want.

Is adulthood not at all what you thought it would be when you were a child? If you’re questioning whether life has to feel this hard all of the time, or if you are the only person who can’t “figure life out,” I may be the warm, authentic, and non-judgemental counsellor to help. My passion is to help people feel less alone, less abnormal, and more hopeful about the future. I might be a great fit if you are wanting a flexible therapist who can give you the space to find your own best path forward AND offer gentle, professional insight. I particularly enjoy supporting individuals with social anxiety, panic, and OCD.

From a young age I have had a desire to hear people's stories and have loved to connect with children, teens, adults and families. I hope sessions feel like conversations that allow people the opportunity to feel safe in rereading what has already been written, be curious of the the chapter they are writing and authentically show up in the world and their relationships with themselves and with others. I can help with behavioral issues, burn out, anxiety, depression, peer relationships, self-esteem, stress and other presenting challenges.

We are all in recovery for something. And one of the biggest barriers to recovery is trying to do it by yourself. Everyone should have the opportunity to reach out and ask for assistance. However, that does not mean that you are helpless and don't have power, choice, and voice in what happens for you. If you are dealing with mental health or emotional challenges that have you feeling helpless, without direction, overwhelmed, or simply puzzled and you are ready to join someone in a journey where you receive support and guidance while you also act as the caption of your recovery ship, then I think we could be a great fit.

Have you ever asked yourself, "How do I even feel my feelings"? Or wondered how you heal pain from the past? Perhaps you just don't feel like you are living a life you love and are not sure why. I believe that our feelings are always telling us something, but many of us were never taught what to do with those feelings. We can hold onto unresolved feelings from our past which can then impact us in unconscious ways, keeping us from living the lives we want. I work primarily with women and people from the 2SLGBTQ+ community to heal the past and overcome present challenges to move forward more intentionally.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
