Working with clients aged 11 to 111, I work with individuals, couples, polycules and groups. I am trained in multicultural counselling and welcome clients from various cultures and ethnicities. Equity, diversity and inclusion are a priority for me...hence the name 'one love counselling'. We are all connected. I have experience and training in polyamory and stay updated with current courses, and I’ve taken courses on gender-affirming medical and surgical treatments. You can read my blogs on my website, and please follow me on Instagram - one love counselling.

Be kind to everyone, including yourself, especially when you’re hurting. Sometimes self-compassion can easily be forgotten when we’re hurting. Sometimes we need a little support to remind ourselves to take care and support ourselves, which is where therapy can be helpful. I work from a variety of counselling modalities. I believe in using compassion and self-compassion practices to help support my clients. I value a relational, client-centered, and strength-based approach. I believe clients are the expert in their own situation and thus I believe in empowering my clients to use their own agency and resources as a focus.

Our humanness naturally predisposes us to vulnerabilities and it is in those vulnerabilities that resilience is cultivated. There are times, however, when we are filled with uneasiness, meaninglessness, unhappiness and/or uncertainty and our struggle seems unbearable. Undoubtedly, life presents us with challenges and I firmly believe these can be transitory circumstances that can reawaken us by opening up opportunities for our attainment of greater self-awareness and deeper and more meaningful sense of our authentic selves, of gratitude, courage and resiliency and of preparation for meaningful change, growth and sense of freedom.

I believe every client has the wisdom and resilience they need to live meaningful and fulfilled lives. I work with adults and couples to explore and understand the beliefs that guide them in their relationships and behaviour. I see my role as a supportive scaffold which stands to enable my clients to embrace the vulnerability needed to heal. Each client's journey is informed by their mind and body; I incorporate information from these as we navigate the therapy process. In therapy I focus on issues of existence, including growth towards self-awareness and self-acceptance, and meaningful behavioural change.

Are you experiencing burn out, chronic stress, anxiety, or depression? Talking to a psychologist can help. It is common to feel unsure when taking the first step towards working on your mental health. I aspire to ease any uncertainty by compassionately supporting my clients through any concern they wish to explore in our sessions. In my experience, each client’s story is unique. Once I gain an understanding of your individual preferences, strengths, and goals, I will customize an approach drawing on my experience with evidence-based practices to support you in your circumstances.

Multicultural Counsellors

What type of therapy is multicultural therapy?

Multicultural therapy is not tied to any specific therapy; rather, it is an overarching approach to therapy that aims to acknowledge and address the influence that factors like race, gender identity, and cultural background can have on someone’s life. Multicultural approaches can be applied to CBT, psychodynamic therapy, and others, and can be practiced with individuals, couples, families, or groups.

What can I expect from multicultural therapy?

Multicultural counselling should be tailored to the client’s unique identity and cultural needs. Such approaches often prioritise the building of trust so that the client feels comfortable exploring various aspects of their identity and any challenges caused by mismatches between their identity and the dominant culture. Beyond that, the format and timeline of therapy will be heavily influenced by the therapist’s preferred therapy approach and the specific problems for which the client sought therapy.

Can multicultural therapy help treat trauma?

Yes. Cultural factors such as racial background, gender identity and or sexuality, and immigration or refugee status can influence both whether someone experiences trauma and how they cope afterward. Multicultural approaches to trauma-informed care will be aware of these influences, helping the client recognise how their response to trauma may be shaped by their cultural background and identify coping mechanisms that take their identity into account.

What are the benefits of seeing a multicultural therapist?

Members of minority groups who seek therapy are sometimes frustrated by providers who don’t understand their cultural background or dismiss the ways in which race, gender, or other facets of their identity influence their lived experience. Seeing a multicultural therapist can help these clients feel seen, understood, and able to develop solutions to life challenges that take their upbringing, beliefs, and past experiences into account.
