My ideal client is committed to healing from his/her current or past trauma/grief and are open to various ways of healing. Their goals are to obtain new tools to utilize when they are in crisis, feeling anxious, sad or disillusioned. They want to be at peace in the present moment. They want to be happy, content and confident in their choices. Most of all, they have hope for the future and they have love and compassion for themselves. They are easily able to forgive themselves and pick up where they left off knowing mistakes are one of their greatest teachings.

My internship primarily involved counselling women who had experienced abusive relationships because of past childhood trauma.
I specialize in working with women who have suffered childhood trauma and are currently struggling in toxic relationships. As a professional, I support those who are struggling with the ongoing issue of being trapped in abusive relationships. These experiences can leave individuals feeling worthless and questioning their own sanity. Adequate sleep, meaningful intimacy with one's partner, and quality family time are pivotal in mitigating the effects of childhood trauma. I am here to help you achieve these goals, and to remind you that being part of a community that values and cherishes you is a basic human need.

Weaving through your strengths and resources, I bring in my lived experience as someone who has had to re-start a few things in life. I believe it is never too late to embark on a journey to achieve better health. I studied, worked and lived in 4 different continents: Africa, Europe, Asia and North America and I'm passionate about walking alongside families, youths, seniors and individuals from diverse backgrounds on their journey to whole health as they harness their internal and external resources to get to optimum mental health. As a Christian, my approach to work is based on Amos 3:3- “Can two walk together unless they agree?”

I believe that the single most important aspect of the counselling process is the development of a safe, respectful working relationship between the therapist and client. It takes a lot of courage for people to walk through the counselling door. I want to ensure that clients get a very good sense of who I am and how I work so that the client leaves after the first session knowing they have been heard and understood - and feel positive about our ability to work together.

I believe that all people have a natural affinity toward growth and healing. As a psychologist it is my role to provide a safe, non-judgemental and compassionate space to explore concerns as they arise. I honour the strengths and abilities that each person brings to therapy and use these as important and valuable resources to move toward wellness. Equality and understanding problems within the context in which they occur are also important tenants of my work. Through connection and collaboration, I work together with clients to find the right solutions for them.

We all feel lost from time to time. Part of us wants to move forward and part of us wants to stay the same. We wrestle within ourselves and we emotionally wrestle with those we are closest to. It can be overwhelming and exhausting. We are a product of our past; good, bad, or otherwise. You know that there is so much more to you than the battles that you are facing. There is freedom in getting to know why you respond the way that you do, and there is a way to change the way you respond.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
