I specialize in psychodynamic therapy from an Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) framework.
Finding lasting relief from difficulties like depression, anxiety, trauma, or medically unexplained physical symptoms (e.g., IBS, tension headaches, or pain) can be difficult. Perhaps you have been trying to address your issues via coping skills, self-help books, or by accessing various health care providers. If you continually feel stuck, are in pain, or are confused about why your symptoms aren’t improving, you might be ready to look into the underlying emotional factors contributing to your symptoms. Together, we can understand and address the roots of your problems so that you can stop suffering and start living.

I am a Psychodynamic Depth Therapist.
Sometimes our thoughts and feelings become unmanageable without help. Anxiety, stress and depression are just some of the ways our mind tells us that something isn't right, or the ways we've coped in the past aren't quite working as well as they did. Change can be unsettling and distressing, but it can also be healing, fulfilling and hopeful. I provide a therapeutic space that is safe, warm and engaging where you can engage in your process, at whatever pace you need.

As adults, we are often called to a process of unlearning and undoing on our journey toward internal fulfillment, happiness and peace. It starts with choosing to embark on the healing journey, find happiness, and cultivate the life you genuinely desire. They say pain can be our greatest teacher, and I can assist you with the tools and support as you embark on your journey of personal transformation and self-discovery.

My training includes psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, solution-focused, trauma-informed, expressive arts, dialectical behavioural therapies, systemic models, EMDR and brain-spotting.
Many things in our lives are on a continuum, including the intensity of the problem, resilience, resourcefulness, and healing. Sometimes we need more guidance and help than other times, and sometimes we feel that we can manage on our own. The striving to heal or cope at our best may be subtle or more apparent in our lives, which helps to realize that change is needed, contemplate it, and act. My approach to psychotherapy is integrative, eclectic, and trauma-informed.

If you are looking to gain a deeper satisfaction in life, and create a lasting change that will have a trickle down effect into the rest of your life I may be a great fit for you. Together we will work to overcome barriers (PTSD, anxiety, OCD, depression, marital/family difficulties, and existential issues) that are standing in your way of a more joyful life. I have specialized training to work with children, teens, adults and couples. I believe that through acceptance, introspection, exploration and application of these in one’s life change can begin and be long-lasting. I'd be happy to meet with you!

Psychological interventions are a way to understand, and change problematic behaviours and relationships that impede a person's development. I see the maladaptive patterns that people become embroiled in as knots, and psychotherapy as a way for people to untie the emotional knots they find themselves in. My approach is psychodynamic in orientation which means how to fundamentally change the negative patterns we continually make across multiple relationships. My particular skill is in working with and helping you to understand the emotional relationships people engage in and how these can have negative and positive consequences

Hi, my name is Suzan :) - I work with couples and Individuals to support them awaken to what's beyond the psychological structures, personal stories, and past traumas. My educational background, and 24 years of professional experience, draws from various therapeutic traditions such as the cognitive,(CBT), systemic, (IFS), psychodynamic and existential, but it is the deeper and transpersonal perspective and approach that has my heart; It is about growing a loving awareness of yourself, and what's beyond the self; to tap into a greater sense of our connectedness with everything, to be at home inside, and to build our life in that.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
