Are you a little different? Queer or Trans? ADHDer? Autistic spouse? Survivor of Religious Trauma? Maybe you have a specific set of unique personalities in your family. Maybe you have a bunch of labels but what you really want to talk about is being lonely. Maybe you've never found someone who really acknowledged that thinking your way through your problems doesn't work. Your problems don't fit in a neat little category, and you don't have a nice little summary of who you are, where you came from, and what is ailing you. Guess what? That's exactly how therapy starts: with the best pieces of you all tangled up with fear and shame.

My approach focuses on the whole family, valuing everyone's input.
Has your child experienced a traumatic event that has impacted their emotional well-being? Does your child struggle with anxiety, difficulty focusing in school, or challenges making friends? Does your family find it difficult to connect with each other, especially after a painful or traumatic experience? Are you or your child navigating a difficult transition related to race or identity, and feeling overwhelmed by the associated stress? Are you a parent who is having a hard time connecting or understanding a teenage child?

I work steadily with clients to reframe outlooks on their shortcomings through storytelling and identifying who has influenced their identity (cultural/societal/family influences).
As a Somali-Canadian therapist, I have lived experiences navigating two identities and understanding trauma. I work with individuals and couples who are struggling with communication, understanding cultural impacts on identity, and breaking cycles. My approach to therapy is: pro-Black, pro-choice, pro-queer, pro-trans, and focuses on being an affirming therapist. I support all cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations and gender identities.

I also have a special interest around queer family and fertility conversations.
My work is guided by the belief that our stories are nested within broader social, cultural, economic, and political narratives that can diminish our personal ways of knowing the world. I aim to nurture a collaborative, transparent, and empathic space where we can be curious about the stories we tell. A space of possibility to wonder if there are more valuable stories that we could author. Guided by feminist and queer care ethics, my intention is to cultivate a transformative relationship where we can construct counter-stories that center your personal values.

The impact of adverse childhood experiences often colours our choices, responses and reactions to the challenges of everyday life. These childhood experiences often manifest themselves in how we experience ourselves, as well as in our relationships with our spouses, partners, family, friends and co-workers. I have over a decade of experience working with individuals, couples and families struggling with trauma, relationship challenges, substance abuse, and domestic violence.

You feel overwhelmed and defeated. Regardless of how hard you try, you feel like you aren’t good enough. You struggle to live up to the expectations that you have for yourself and that everyone seems to have for you. These feelings may show up in your relationships with partner(s), family, or friends; in your career; or even in how you relate to your body. Maybe the seeds of self-doubt were planted by a well-meaning person in your life. Maybe they come from your social media feed or societal expectations to be perfect. You wish you could let go of the pressure and live a more fulfilling and authentic life.

People and their healing journeys have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. I come from a family of supporters so a mental health therapist was a great fit for me. I have always had a genuine curiosity and passion for watching people heal. I always wanted to know the magic trick, and I found out that it's embedded in human nervous system and body. I specialize in helping individuals who have experienced attachment injury, disruption, or trauma across the lifespan. These wounds can manifest as emotional scars, communication challenges, or unresolved hurts, often within the complex dynamics of the family system.

Born and raised in Alberta, I’ve learned that nothing is ever as it seems. We can experience spring, summer, fall, and winter all in one day! Alberta has definitely taught me to be flexible and to look for the individual strengths in people. I’ve dedicated my life to learning about developmental disabilities. I use a SCERTS model mixed with CBT and play based interventions. I like to be flexible, using a client centered approach, because I’ve found that even though two people can go through the “same” situation the way they process it is unique to them. I work towards establishing emotional regulation tools that work for the family

I am also so fortunate to have a family that fills my heart and allows me to understand the many challenges that parents encounter these days, including limiting screen time and recognizing social media hazards.
As a registered psychologist and having been in private practice for 14 years, I have had the privilege to meet and work with many wonderful couples, families and individuals. I strive to establish a solid rapport with clients in a comfortable environment. I have been told that clients appreciate my professional and direct approach that is not overly formal and allows for humour when appropriate. I use a biopsychosocial approach and incorporate several therapeutic modalities. I work to not only focus on managing symptoms, but getting down to the root cause of what is getting in the way of being able to achieve one’s goals.

I have extensive experience with Multicultural Sensitivity and Diverse Populations as well as Family and Marital Therapy.
Many people struggle with confidence and are unable to fulfill their goals for relationships, work, and personal fulfillment. Understanding how your core values and beliefs impact aspects of your life such as work, relationships, and overall fulfillment can give you the power to overcome these struggles. Through learning to accept and love yourself fully you can move past shame that is likely impacting how you feel and behave. Through awareness of your power to change the meaning you give to events within your childhood, you can become free from limiting beliefs.

I also offer individual, couples, and family counselling.
As a therapist, one of my passions is working with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, low self-esteem, anger, relationship issues, and suicidal ideation. Many people feel that they are alone in their struggles. I believe my role as your therapist is to remind you that you are not alone, normalize how you feel, and provide helpful tools along the way. My approach is solution focused, goal-oriented, strength-based, and trauma-informed. However, my main focus is building a strong therapeutic relationship that will help you feel safe, heard, and understood.

Therapy is an opportunity to find ways to live a more fulfilling and satisfying life. It helps in overcoming difficult symptoms or stresses, cope effectively with problems or bring positives into your life when things are going well. I work with people struggling in their family relationships, or those in high distress from loss, grief & trauma, or people trying to cope with eating disorders, anxiety, depression, or emotional pain. In my work with individuals I have learned that working from a broad base of theories and techniques is best integrated in the therapeutic work.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
