Grief is a deeply painful, lonely, and isolating experience. When someone we care about dies, our relationship ends in divorce, or we experience any of the other 40 forms of loss, we often feel unprepared and ill-equipped to deal with our emotions. The wonderful news is, grief does not have to be a life sentence of suffering. There are actionable tools that can help you to move beyond the pain caused by a loss in your life. Whether you are grieving due to a recent loss or a loss from long ago, it is never too soon or too late to heal your heart.

Welcome and congratulations for taking a step forward to explore what therapy can do for you. Recognizing obstacles and reaching out for help and guidance can be scary, yet empowering, and you should feel pride in arriving at this stage. Perhaps you know exactly what is causing you distress or maybe you just do not feel right, either way, you deserve to be heard. I believe that every individual who seeks therapy should be heard and provided with help that is tailored to them and their needs. Therefore, I endeavour to maintain a collaborative relationship with my clients, ensuring it is mutually beneficial, safe, and productive.

Our humanness naturally predisposes us to vulnerabilities and it is in those vulnerabilities that resilience is cultivated. There are times, however, when we are filled with uneasiness, meaninglessness, unhappiness and/or uncertainty and our struggle seems unbearable. Undoubtedly, life presents us with challenges and I firmly believe these can be transitory circumstances that can reawaken us by opening up opportunities for our attainment of greater self-awareness and deeper and more meaningful sense of our authentic selves, of gratitude, courage and resiliency and of preparation for meaningful change, growth and sense of freedom.

Loss is a universal experience. However, many of us are ill prepared to deal with the resulting, often conflicting mass of emotions we call grief. While the emotional incompleteness can have a lifelong, cumulatively negative impact on our capacity for happiness, it doesn't have to. The Grief Recovery Method provides the correct action choices that help individuals move beyond the pain, isolation, and loneliness caused by loss of any kind. I strive to provide a safe space within which you as a client can make these choices and move toward healing and recovery.

Sometimes, the more you try to hold it together on the outside, the more you fall apart on the inside. If you're feeling anxious, depressed, devastated, confused and overwhelmed by daily responsibilities, life transitions, relationships, grief or trauma, you're probably striving to get back on your feet. It happens to all of us and even the strongest can benefit from taking time to explore (often hidden or forgotten) inner resources. It's not a sign of weakness to seek support, but of wisdom: when what used to work no longer does, it's time to explore alternative options.

Using mind-body-spirit therapies, we focus on resilience, what and you love, how you have dealt with past issues, what you have already created or accomplished in life. What is your "intention" personally, in relationships, for work/creativity? Anxiety, depression, trauma, living well with chronic pain, health, relationships, work place, loss of meaning or direction in life, and creative performance. I am best suited to clients who are interested in incorporating body-mind modalities as well as "talk". Teleconferencing (Zoom, FaceTime) works very well . In person is available.

My speciality is working with individuals who may be struggling with: trauma, addiction, grief, depression and anxiety, and stress.
Deciding to attend therapy often happens at very difficult times in life and it can be challenging to meet with a stranger to discuss personal issues. I work hard to create a space where a client can feel comfortable enough to engage in the therapeutic process and feel like they are actually getting something out of therapy, more than what they could get from having a chat with a good friend. I am able to offer a client a sense of partnership; that we are continually working towards change. I know clients do better when the therapist is present and engaged and so I work to give you a sense of who I am in our interactions.

I care about helping people feel better and know they can heal and grow. I have a special interest in working with children, teens and adults regarding anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, neurodiversity, emotion regulation, stress management, addictions, life transitions, and loss. In addition to individuals, I work with couples and families. I create strong therapeutic relationships and a safe space for people to share their concerns and to work toward meeting their goals.

Grief Counsellors

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
