"Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." - Albert Einstein - As a psychologist, I tend to work with people to focus them on what they can change and control to find successes with their problems. Whether working with couples, families, children, youth, or adults, I'd like to be the guy who listens in a way others may have failed to hear you before. My ideal client is anyone craving new skills, new ways of thinking and feeling, and is ready to learn how to think anew about the things they were once sure of.

I collaborate with clients to help them pursue healing, growth, and change in their lives. I support clients as they work through trauma due to present and past events, and to form meaning and purpose moving forward. I combine EMDR, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and play therapy, depending on clients' needs. I offer family mediation for those experiencing separation or divorce, to improve communication and build a path forward. I work with individuals, couples, and children. Do you struggle with anxiety, depression, ADHD, and/or trauma, that affects your day-to-day functioning, relationships, career? Do you feel exhausted, frustrated, overwhelmed by living up to others standards, getting through the day, feeling like there's no light at the end of the tunnel? Now more than ever, people are feeling anxious and uncertain about how they are supposed to manage their relationships, work through trauma, finding their place in life. Pushing away your needs and not taking time for yourself can lead to long term issues for your mind and body. I believe it shouldn't be so hard to live a better life.

My practice, over the years, has become more and more attuned to problems of conflict and issues of violence. As a trained child psychologist, I have seen first hand the raw damage an emotional injury continues to create. As a clinician, it has not been unusual for me to see the same sorts of trauma: yet locked away in one's memory, living on in current behaviour. This is what conflict can do. The issues just seem to keep on repeating themselves, inevitably with the same unfortunate outcomes. (My role sometimes is the Life Coach who becomes a personal guide.)

Life is a journey and at times it can be complicated and messy. It might be that your child is struggling, your family has difficulty getting along, or it's you who needs support with the day to day stressors. We can help, things can change and you have already taken the first step.

My name is Sydney McKenzie-Hougestol (she/her) and I am a Registered Psychologist. I chose to go into this field because I love people and I believe in people. I have worked with people in the field of mental health, addictions, and trauma for 8 years. I think often the key to unlocking what is going on for a person is looking into the ways they have learned to judge themselves for what they feel and think and challenging those assumptions. I am passionate about working with people and empowering them find new ways of looking at themselves, their relationships, and the world.

I enjoy using my expertise to help children, adolescents, parents, and adults explore neurodevelopmental differences through supportive psychological assessment. The clients I work with are neurodiverse themselves, and/or have neurodivergent children. They are exploring this diversity to better understand themselves or their child, their needs, and how they can thrive at home, in school, in the workplace, and in their broader community. Diagnostic assessment can help to support appropriate interventions, access supports, clarify aspects of personal identity, and help people develop the story of who they are.
