SMART therapy is ideal for children and teens who find it difficult to sit, regulate and focus, such as: ADHD & Oppositional Defiance Disorder, emotional and behavioral dysregulation, inability to accept help, low frustration tolerance & explosive anger.
In SMART therapy clients are directed to REGULATE through MOVEMENT and as a result START TALKING so problem solving and healing can happen. Therapy is provided in a specially designed room with specialized equipment, such as arial swings, spinning, weighted blankets, balance beams, fitness balls, person sized pea-pod, body socks, dolphin pillows, and safe cubby holes, and tents. Movement, rest and safety is used to support natural ways of regulating bodies and emotions, facilitate parent-child attachment-building and allow for embodied processing of hurtful and traumatic experiences. It is not at all like traditional play therapy.

My approach is based on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy or CBT, which holds that our unhelpful thoughts lead to our emotional distress and unproductive behaviors.
Anxiety, depression, self-harm and relationship problems can cause distress - just getting by day to day can be tough. We often struggle alone believing things will never get better. Family and friends urge us to get over it, stop talking about it! But, you need to talk. I care and I am here to help. Together we can find a solution and make the changes that will make a difference in your life. Together we will work towards making life less stressful, overwhelming and more enjoyable! If you can't come to me, I will come to you!

To help achieve your goals, I draw on different therapeutic approaches, most frequently Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Attachment Focused Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (AF-EMDR), as well as others to best fit the needs of each of my clients.
I believe that we are always striving for more fulfilling lives, with positive relationships and internal wellbeing, but we often find there are barriers that seem to get in the way. In my practice I offer support when clients are feeling overwhelmed, stuck in old patterns, uncertain how to heal from previous trauma, or are experiencing challenging dynamics with the people in their lives. My goal is to work with clients to create significant change, overcome challenges, move through barriers and help them live their preferred lives. Together we will make a plan unique for you.

What happens in therapy for behavioural issues?
No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behaviour issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.
What therapy types help with behavioural issues?
Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioural therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.
How long does therapy last for behavioural issues?
Among popular approaches to treating behavioural concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behaviour management, often used when the underlying cause of behaviour issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioural issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.
How effective is therapy for behaviour issues?
Studies show that therapy for behaviour issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behaviour later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behaviour. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
