Located in Calgary. It is a difficult time, and challenges happen, my hope is to be able to work with you and draw on your strengths while offering a new perspective to help improve how things are going for you. One of the most challenging parts of counselling is the first step - reaching out. I am so happy to connect, answer questions, offer a no charge initial consultation, and to get started.

I have years of experience working with autistic communities and recognize that ND presentations can vary widely beyond male stereotypes (70%+ of the people I assess identify as wo men).
Looking for an adult autism assessment with a neurodivergent psychologist? Feeling dismissed by people who don’t understand medical trauma or how hard it is to stop masking? You have the right to feel accepted, heard, and believed—even during an assessment! I was “late-diagnosed” and understand how relieving a diagnosis can be after decades of feeling misunderstood and exhausted. My assessments are thorough and the options were entirely designed by autistic people, who I routinely work with to refine things. You can do the entire assessment from home and take the time you need. Do a FREE self-screen on my site here: www.ndpsych.com

In my practice, I specialize in treating trauma, anxiety, chronic pain, and chronic symptoms. I focus on using mind-body approaches to support people in regulating their nervous system, approaching their emotions with a sense of safety, becoming embodied, and living life with passion. Many mental and physical health concerns are due to a dysregulated nervous system, so to heal we need to build a relationship with our nervous system using top-down and bottom-up approaches to self-regulate.

In Alberta, I am one of only a few therapists to have completed the ComB training - this is currently the gold standard cognitive behavioural approach to managing BFRBs.
Hair pulling and skin picking can be very challenging to manage independently - they are highly complex behaviours. Often these Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviours (BFRBs) result in shame and guilt. They can be isolating and worrisome. You may feel alone, but you are not. I specialize in treating BFRBs. I also regularly work with clients who have anxiety, obsessions and compulsions (OCD), impulsivity, and individuals who lack confidence (work, studies, relationships). As a Clinical Psychologist (22 years), my approach will help you to experience positive change in the short-term, and learn how to sustain this change in the long-term.

My specialty is Hu man Sexuality. I'm a Certified Sex Therapist, Psychotherapist and am a mostly retired, formerly Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). I have 50+ years experience. I was trained, mentored and supervised by Dr. Wardell Pomeroy of the Kinsey Institute. I help my patients achieve their greatest sexual and relationship potential, beyond diagnosis and treatment of their concerns, to reach the most exciting levels of an intimate relationship. I see many patients online. It is efficient and effective, and it permits the intimacy and immediacy of an in-office consultation, from the comfort of your home or office.

I work from a client centered approach as the basis for our work together. We can then decide on which of the empirically supported approaches (or more likely which combination of approaches) is the best fit for you and your situation. The basis is a non-judgmental stance to what you face and designing a tailored, you-specific, empirically supported approach to help you gain a better understanding of your situation and more adaptive ways of managing or coping. I borrow from various approaches including client-centered, Cognitive-behavioral, Acceptance and Commitment, Mindfulness-based, Emotion focused, and insight oriented.

Would you like to change your life? Are you unsure what that means, or afraid of what it entails? Change can be scary, but you don’t have to do it alone. People describe me as someone who is warm, authentic, and accepting. My desire for you is that you don’t just manage symptoms, but that you get to the root of issues, find healing there, and experience deep, transformational, and lasting change – change that is not based on willpower, but change that is felt, experienced, and real. In working with me you may find relief, experience peace, begin to hope again, and enjoy life in a way you didn’t think was possible.

As a son, brother, husband, father to two children, and Chinese-Canadian man, I believe my lived experiences, skills, and knowledge can support you in identifying and pursuing your goals.
Distress can be the catalyst for personal growth and meaningful transformation. The journey can take many paths and I would be honoured to join you. We will work collaboratively together and provide guidance toward positive change. We will focus on trust to create a safe and supportive relationship. It is crucial to me that we have a strong relationship in the therapy room, laying the foundation for effective therapy. I find value in understanding how past experiences shape our ways of thinking, relationship patterns, and coping mechanisms. In other times of need, we will focus on the urgent crisis at hand.

Have you noticed that you haven’t felt like yourself lately or maybe you can’t remember the last time you did? Is it difficult to connect with loved ones or yourself? Have you been wondering is this all there is to life, wishing for something, anything, to change? You are not alone, feelings of anxiety and depression have left people across the world feeling overwhelmed and lost in how to manage relationships, careers, and their lives. This often leads to pushing away your needs and not taking time for yourself, leading to long-term issues for your mind and body. I believe it shouldn’t be so hard to live a better life.

Relationships in our lives present us with an infinite number of experiences that bring successes, challenges and everything in between. The stories that we live everyday contain relationships that form the foundation of our mental and physical well-being. There are times when we want the current stories in our life to continue and at other times we hope and need for something to change so that we can live the life we desire as an individual and in relation to others. Regardless of the challenges you are experiencing there is a way to find a path forward towards a desired story that will bring fulfillment and joy in your life.

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
