I specialize in depression, anxiety, trauma, couples work, life transition, belief system struggles, religious trauma, existential and self discovery, and sexuality and gender issues.
I aim to meet my clients apart from the pretension and stigmas of the psychology world, as well as the norms of culture/society in general. Creating a space apart from all the things we think we need to be and should be allows for an authenticity to engage the obstacles in life in a new way. Therapy should not be “one size fits all” and so with the expertise that you have of your life, combined with my skills and training, we can work together to get past both the internal and external things keeping you from being more of the human you were meant to be; creating a new mental space where you can continue to grow and thrive.

My purpose is to help those with trauma find peace. Trauma has many faces. From haunting memories, and dreams to feeling anxious, angry, and depressed. Ties with friends and family can also be hurt. As much as trauma is painful, it is treatable. Over my 20 years of work, I have become an expert at building coping skills and helping others heal. I have had the honour to work with Canadian military veterans, RCMP, Calgary police, Paramedics and other professionals. I am also experienced working with persons who have been abused by their family and loved ones, motor vehicle accidents and other serious traumas.

You're overwhelmed and second-guessing everything. Often you feel like a failure and an imposter and wonder how you got here. Some days you’re the man you want to be, and others, you’re barely holding it all together. There are days when you feel lost, hopeless, and lacking direction. Stress, anxiety, fear, anger, and even depression are negatively impacting your relationships, your work, and your sense of confidence. You want so much more from your life but are not sure how to get there.

I have 15 years of experience in public health care and private practice helping people with depression, anxiety, stress, loss, self-esteem, relationship concerns, anger, and perfectionism.
I am a clinical psychologist who works with individuals and couples. Some have been struggling for a long time while others have lost their footing in the face of recent life stress. Change and growth happen when individuals feel that they are taken seriously, understood, accepted, and supported. In this context, my clients become more open, aware, and honest about the full range of their thoughts and feelings. Hope and courage grow as they face life's challenges. They learn new, flexible, and effective ways to think and respond, alter unhelpful patterns in relationships, and gain greater self-acceptance and resilience.

In my experience, most people are much more courageous and resilient than they give themselves credit for. As such, in both my assessment and therapy work, I focus on an individual’s strengths to help them develop skills and resources for tackling whatever they are struggling with. Do you need help managing your stress and worry about the current state of the world? Are you dealing with grief, loss, or unresolved trauma? Do you have symptoms such as depressed mood, fatigue, insomnia, pain, panic attacks or unhealthy behaviours such as avoidance, anger, or substance misuse? Do you have a loved one with dementia? I can help.

If you're experiencing worry, stress, anxiety, depression, challenges during conception/pregnancy/postpartum, life transitions, relationship issues, separation/divorce, or grief & loss—let's chat so we can make life more manageable for you.
Feeling overwhelmed lately? I want to hear about the hard stuff life’s been throwing your way. I get it—sometimes, it’s a lot. Eventually, the hard stuff can start to affect the way we think, feel, and act. Sometimes we start to feel disconnected from our true selves, and our relationships. I create a safe space for you to explore and process what is going on for you. With support, you can realize that you are not alone, and change is possible. I meet you where you’re at, and we move forward from there.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
