Most of how we feel, respond and think is based on unconscious patterning beliefs. I am committed to providing a safe and compassionate space for you to feel welcomed where ever you are at. By shedding light on what is unconscious through the pathway of increased awareness major transformation, healing and new neural connections can occur. The secret to feeling more ease lies in examining the core issues that are causing the distress and look directly into those places that we are avoiding. This approach arises from my experience that lasting change occurs when metal, physical, emotional and spiritual systems are all involved.

The COVID-19 Pandemic, Russian-Ukrainian conflict, runaway inflation, housing/food crisis, rise in violent crime, etc.; what do all of these events have in common? They subconsciously affect everyone's behaviour and thoughts. All of us are part of the same social fabric, and what affects the whole affects its parts, & vice-versa. No one is immune from these external influences; everybody feels the consequences of global, political & economic turmoil. The effects may be subtle, but our mood, energy & health are unequivocally impacted; our perception of ourselves & others may fluctuate wildly and our relationships suffer considerably.

I have a special interest working with the LGBTQ* community and strive to create a safe space for them.
I believe each person is the expert in their own life but sometimes along our journey the lens through which we see the world and ourselves becomes a bit muddied and this impacts the way we behave and react to new experiences. My role in your journey is to help you see clearly again through that lens so you can get back to living more true to your authentic self. I work primarily from an attachment lens and have a gentle, yet direct approach to therapy. I work best with clients who aren't afraid to bring a little humor into sessions when appropriate and safe to do so.

I am non-binary and queer, and welcome members of queer and trans communities.
My approach to therapy is practical, creative, humorous, and interactive. Engaging in therapy is a vulnerable and courageous step, and I aim to foster a comfortable, collaborative process. When the tools and skills that were previously helpful are no longer working, I support clients to cultivate new coping skills, and identify potential areas for change and/or acceptance. I am a seasoned therapist who is able to draw from a variety of modalities depending on what comes up for the client.

My practice is focused on decolonizing, fat-liberation, unlearning normative values, LGBTQ2IA+ and BIPOC advocacy, sexuality, kink, neurodiversity, sports performance, relationships, and boundary setting.
As a queer therapist, I understand the challenges of finding inclusive support and the transformative effects of collaborative therapy. I believe the most powerful aspect of therapy is a therapeutic partnership that learns and grows together. This means that I will bring my whole self into our work together and join you in your exploration and identify the things that matter to you. Healing and growth happen in the presence of safety and being truly seen and understood. I offer an anti-oppressive, queer, intersectional, and social justice approach to counselling.

I see adult and adolescent clients from all sorts of different backgrounds, and who present with a variety of psychological concerns. However, I feel I’m especially well-suited to working with folks who are undergoing significant life change (e.g., job insecurity, divorce, bereavement, diagnosis, etc.), and who are experiencing anger, anxiety, or depression while traversing the flux. I’m also a keen advocate of mental wellbeing within a number of specific communities, including: veterans and first responders, men (cis and trans), LGBTQ+ folks, expatriates/immigrants, entrepreneurs, and people practicing consensual non-monogamy.

Maybe you never feel enough, and what "enough" even looks like may feel uncertain. You might be exhausted from feeling the guilt and shame you don't know how to talk about. Perhaps you think your overwhelming past experiences will never leave you. I work with folks who long to accept and connect with themselves & others but feel stuck and in a loop of self-criticism. As a Korean-Canadian Psychologist with many intersecting identities, I also understand and work with many personal and systemic challenges faced by BIPOC & LGBTQ+ communities. I offer care, skills, and insights to support your growth and discovery of new possibilities.

LGBTQ+ Counsellors

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialised training, either during their degree programme or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalisation in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialised training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
