My primary therapeutic framework is DBT, which focuses on increasing skills to tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and improve relationships.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by uncomfortable or painful emotions? Having a hard time controlling urges to act in ways that are unhelpful, ineffective, or harmful? Trying to make changes but find yourself continually falling into the same old patterns? Feeling a bit lost and looking for someone to help you sort through your thoughts? If so, you've come to the right place. I am here to help you explore the barriers that are preventing you from living your best possible life, and figure out how to change what's not working.
This is a structured skills training program informed by a therapeutic approach called dialectical behaviour therapy ( DBT). It is designed to help you learn skills to cope with overwhelming emotions, reduce impulsivity, enhance interpersonal relationships, and ultimately achieve your own personal goals. The Emotion Regulation Skills Group is a closed group consisting of 8-10 participants who are 18 years of age or older. It runs for 12 weeks, each session 2 hours in length. The group is offered in spring, fall, and winter and will cost $1695 for the full 12 weeks. Start date: September 17th, 2024. Registration is open.

I rely on an integrative approach to therapy that combines elements of CBT, ACT, DBT, EFT and EMDR.
I am a Registered Psychologist with a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Alberta. My approach to therapy emphasizes the importance of confronting our painful emotions and experiences from a place of safety, curiosity, and honesty. I work with individuals and couples as well as teens and youth. I also have a special interest in working with men. I believe that men are often under resourced when it comes to accessing, expressing, and understanding their emotions, often leading to painful, yet avoidable, experiences.

Supporting others begins with the presence of a safe space of openness and acceptance that facilitates a client’s innate yearning for healing, growth, and self actualization. My own journey has led me to the joy, mystery, and wonder of self discovery, the healing experience of healthy relationships, and finding meaning and purpose in life. The enjoyment in my work as a therapist comes from guiding clients on their journey to discover what brings them joy and to help them reconnect to their inner resources – their strengths, wholeness, peace, deeper nature, and internal guidance and wisdom.

I am currently on maternity leave but please reach out to our administrative staff to schedule an intake if you are interested in DBT.
I have specialized training and interest in working with individuals who struggle to manage emotions, whether that be that emotions feel particularly overwhelming and out of control, or whether you are more commonly feeling numb or disconnected. I work with teenagers and adults. You have been doing the best you can. Indeed, many of the ways that society tells us to manage difficult thoughts and feelings take a lot of work but actually lead us to be more and more stuck in our problems as time goes on.
Sometimes emotions can feel overwhelming, especially when they feel too intense, last too long, feel wrong or show up when we don’t want them to. This 6-week group program will offer a mixture of psycho-educational support and skill building elements to help you begin to understand and accept your emotions, reduce feelings of emotional vulnerability and volatility, and decrease distress. As you practice each component, you will put another building block into the structure of your own emotion regulation. Sharing personal experiences and getting support from fellow group members and the facilitator are also key parts of this group experience.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Support Groups
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.
Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.
What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.
How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
