Stephanie and Audra have a laid-back and goal-focused approach that will help you feel supported as you do the work of therapy.
Everyone struggles with certain things at different times in their lives. Mental wellness is a journey, not a destination and we are all at different points along the path. Sometimes, we need help guiding our steps and knowing how best to keep going. Our ideal clients may be struggling with issues related to anxiety, depression, relationships, trauma, grief, or personality disorders. Generally, they realize that things in their life are just not working, and they want to learn new ways of behaving, thinking and relating to themselves and others to make lasting changes. Our practice with clients is collaborative and supportive.

Everyone needs a variety of tools in their toolbox to navigate all the different situations that life can throw our way whether that be relationship difficulties, work challenges, or feeling like you’re stuck. Sometimes we need to accept the present moment; other times we need to figure out how to problem solve it; and sometimes it’s most effective to do both. This 12-week online skills training class will cover DBT Skills from all four modules of Marsha Linehan’s Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skills Training Manual (2014): Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Therapy is a personal process, and finding the right fit may take some time.
Do strong emotions and intense memories impact how you live? Sometimes the past seems to become the present, despite our best efforts. Traumatic experiences and chronic stress can create negative thoughts and feelings that can interfere with daily functioning and overall well-being. Coping mechanisms are often developed to manage these distressing experiences, although they may become ineffective or even harmful over time. Addiction (substance/behavioural), anxiety/ depression, etc., and other concerns can arise as a result of unresolved trauma. New to therapy? Tried other types of therapy? Call today for a consult.

DBT Skills Group enables you to access the transformative knowledge and skills of Dialectical Behavior Therapy in a safe and supportive group setting. We’ll focus less on talk therapy, more on the practical how-to of managing your thoughts and emotions when you’re feeling triggered or stressed. “Dialectical” refers to things that seem like opposites but can both be true—like acceptance and change. You learn the skills to find “The Middle Path” between these opposites, accepting the difficulties while changing your thoughts and behavior to build a life worth living—whatever that looks like for you.

I bring warmth, compassion and humor to your therapy experience, giving you the confidence to create the change to meet your goals.
I believe we all have the capacity to heal and learn how to live a life worth living, despite challenging and painful experiences in our lives. I believe the coping strategies we develop can start creating problems if we don’t address the underlying cause. Therapy is a safe space to explore, identify, address and resolve these issues, often creating transformational growth. With over 30 years’ experience working with, and treating clients with a variety of mental health, addictions and trauma related issues, I have delivered therapy through individual and group work, and I am passionate about both approaches.

How will you know by what you are thinking and doing that you won't need therapy anymore? Go ahead and dream of what you want your future to be like.
Getting to the point where you feel like you need therapy can feel awful. You have probably tried many ways of getting better and they haven't worked for you or not well enough. Are you tired of feeling overwhelmed, confused, powerless and disconnected from yourself and others? You don't need to feel like you aren't good enough. You don't need to feel stuck in anger, sadness, fear or disgust. You don't need to feel like your past is heavy and weighing you down in the present. You can process your past so you can live in the present moment. You can feel good about yourself and connect to others. You deserve joy now and in the future.

Group offers a place to try out new behaviours, explore new ways of being, and share parts of yourself that may otherwise be hidden. What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
