How Much Do Hearing Aids Cost?

And what you need to know before you buy one.

A former colleague of mine at The New York Times, Jeanne Pinder, has established an invaluable website that I recommend to all: ClearHealthCosts.com.

You can read about Jeanne and her colleagues by clicking on "About" on the site. You can also find out where their funding comes from, and read a mission statement.

I'll quote just the first two paragraphs of the statement:

"We’re working to bring transparency to the health-care marketplace by telling people prices for medical procedures and items. By revealing prices, we are empowering consumers to make informed decisions about the costs of their medical care and coverage.

"People should be able to know what things cost. If you knew that your MRI could cost $350 or $3,300, maybe you’d choose a different provider. Maybe you’d wonder if your insurance premiums were going up to pay high prices for procedures that could be obtained for less money."

And sure enough, right there on the home page, a reader can indeed find out where an MRI costs $350 and where it costs $3,300. You can also find out about widely varying costs for a mammogram, a vasectomy, teeth whitening or an STD test -- and many many more.

But for now I want to specifially mention ClearHealthCosts three-part series on the cost of hearing aids. What Do Hearing Aids Cost. Click on the link to find Part 3, and links to Part 1 and 2. The three contributors were noted audiologist Brad Ingrao, composer and advocate for those with hearing loss Richard Einhorn, and me. Jeanne Pinder edited.
