Apps to Help Kids Overcome Fears and More
Psychological Tools Parents Can Use

Today’s apps go way beyond Candy Crush and Angry Birds. More and more apps that are useful psychological tools for parents and children are being developed. The following are a few that stand out:
Fobie Friends
Particularly for younger children, it may be difficult to recognize and verbalize their feelings of fear or stress. Parents my notice the manifestations of undealt with emotions in their children’s behavior.
Fobie Friends came out with new iPad apps that help young children face and overcome certain fears and phobias including fear of the dark and fear of heights.
According to their press release, “Fobie Friends is the first series of books to address childhood fears that entertain, but inform in a non-clinical setting. While the books and accompanying plush toys can be used by teachers, counselors and educators, the fantasy like story telling creates a child’s desire for play and fantasy.”
iComm
iComm is a picture and voice communication aid for pre-speech toddlers or children with special needs. The app allows you to add your own photos for an added feeling of connection.
The Parent Tutor APP
“Now parenting comes with instructions.” The Parent Tutor App helps moms and dads learn how to deal with discipline issues like children’s checkout line meltdowns and the woes of whinny kids in crowded stores.
Created by Brian R. King, author and consultant to families with autistic children, this app is designated for parents of typical and special needs children. Parenting strategies include how to discipline your children, defuse arguments, and the right way to provide positive feedback.
Smart Parenting: Raising Happy and Responsible Children In The 21st Century
This app looks at children’s behavior from a psychological standpoint and is designed to help parents understand why children engage in certain behaviors—essentially why children do the things they do. Subjects include: how to know if you’re a demanding parent; communicating with your children; building their self-esteem; and praising your children.
Getting Better Parents
Psychologists, psychotherapists, and other experts developed this iphone app. Multiple choice questions help guide you. This app also allows you to “ask the expert.”
