Love is a choice as much as it is a feeling. Sometimes love takes us by surprise through a romantic gesture or a passionate unexpected kiss. I watched an old Remington Steele episode on my computer the other evening and wondered, "Where are the men who know just the right moment to tussle our hair and hold us tightly?" Lost in the fantasy, I came back to earth realizing that those who receive love are often those who give love, and it isn't always a Hollywood moment.
Every so often we feel distanced from love and so we look for little bits of encouragement. We replay in our minds a love scene. We read old love letters. We look for love quotes that are tiny reminders keeping love alive in small doses.
Little romantic gestures:
Here are thirteen ways to express love to your special someone, your friends, family, children. By expressing love, we bring ourselves joy knowing that love is not just a Valentine's moment, but an ongoing, free-flowing experience that enriches our lives.
Express gratitude. Tell someone how much you appreciate their presence in your life.
Send flowers for no reason other than to say “Thank you for being you.”
Create a memory. Do something out of character. Fill the house with balloons when he returns from a business trip.
Set aside time to give the gift of listening. Make a date if you must, in your own home or at a quiet little neighborhood place, for coffee or a drink and just listen to each other’s thoughts.
Offer an act of kindness. Say, “What can I do for you today that will make your life easier and less stressful?” Then do it.
Write a love note and send it via the U.S. Mail. Here’s a simple start: “I am so grateful that you are in my life. I love you for a million reasons. Here is just one.”
Make time to be together for events that bring you both pleasure, something you can talk about later.
Be forgiving. We all have quirks. When one surfaces, making you want to scream, instead of complaining, switch to the positive-quality channel.
Be thoughtful with gifts. Remember what is special about a person in your life and buy gifts that are unique.
Order fortune cookies with love sayings or Italian Baci candies with love notes and keep a glass jar in your home filled with them. You might also intersperse with gratitude sayings.
Leave a card under the pillow: Have a supply of love or laughter cards and leave one under the pillow at night, or slip one into a briefcase or next to the computer.
Paste a sticky on the bathroom mirror. Good morning wonderful love of my life.
Send a postcard. In Love Quotes: The Wisest, Wittiest . . . and Most Cynical, Leon F. Seltzer, Ph.D., tells us "Having reviewed many 100s of quotations on the wonders of romantic love, here are some that I think represent the best."
In the last pages of his book, Around the Year with Emmet Fox: A Book of Daily Readings, Fox challenges us to make this commitment by saying: “I have chosen the path of Love. My own heart is to be my workshop, my laboratory, my great enterprise, and love is to be my contribution to humanity.”
