Hi, I'm Roberta and I have been calling Australia 'home' for a few years. With both a Bachelor and a Master’s degree in Psychology, as well as an ongoing Graduate Diploma in Relationship Counselling, I bring a wealth of experience working with diverse populations. My professional journey has allowed me to work extensively with young children, adults facing various mental health and life challenges, women recovering from intimate partner violence, and couples seeking to improve their relationships. I strongly believe in the resilience of the human spirit and that understanding what has happened to us is the key to transformation.

I am passionate about healthy relationships so if you are experiencing difficulties or unease in any of these areas, you can benefit from supportive counselling with me to explore what is contributing to the problem and what can lead to the positive change you are seeking. You may have relationship and intimacy challenges, marriage and parenting struggles, or be going through a tricky life transition like family separation. You may be in a relationship or family which is affected by disability and neuro-diverse behaviours. In all of these situations, it is common to feel anxious or stressed when you are handling things on your own.

Like most psychologists I use different approaches - narrative therapy, family systems, mindfulness, CBT. My main focus is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). So, some of what I do might seem familiar and other techniques may be new to you. Whatever the case, it is important that clients experience therapy as transparent - I am always ready to discuss what we are doing, why we are doing it and what the expected outcome is. The idea is to provide clients with an accepting and non-judgmental environment so they can talk honestly and express difficult emotions.

Do emotions sometimes become too painful and overwhelming? Taking that first step to contact someone for help can be very difficult. Establishing a caring therapeutic relationship attuned to individual needs is central to Susanna’s work. As research supports, the therapeutic relationship is the most powerful determinant of a positive outcome in psychotherapy. Susanna encourages her clients to explore and become aware how early experiences shape their present thoughts and behaviours. Gaining a greater understanding of their circumstances, allows for an empowered sense of their ability to create positive change.

I’m a generally registered psychologist who’s friendly nature and client-centred approach to therapy allow clients to feel supported, heard, and understood. I provide a safe collaborative space for clients to explore their unique challenges using evidenced based practices. I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship based on empathy and trust underpins meaningful and lasting change. I also understand that reaching out for support is the first step but it’s often the most difficult.

Domestic Abuse Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
