As a mature person I have the benefit of my own life experience as well as my many years of professional practice that I can draw upon. This has enabled me to help many people to improve the quality of their lives and their relationships and to cope with and overcome the traumas and challenges that life eventually presents to all of us.

I pride myself on being on of the few psychologists who will help you investigate the underlying processes behind your difficulties. If you're prepared to commit to the therapeutic process to create meaningful change, then I hope you will contact me. Achieving sustainable change is not quick process, so if you're in need of immediate tools to alleviate symptoms in the short-term, I encourage you find one of the great professionals who offer more of that service. On the other hand, if you feel there are unconscious processes that you're ready to explore, my psychoanalytic approach might suit you more.

Are you feeling distressed, anxious or traumatised by historical or recent experiences? I can help you alleviate, transcend or transform these symptoms, and reclaim psycho-social and emotional wellbeing. The stories we tell about current events and memories of past episodes in our lives profoundly impact on us and our loved ones. Good therapy relies upon us forming sufficient mutual trust and compassion to discuss and interpret personal matters. I look forward to hearing your story and helping you revise retellings of it that firm your resolve to follow your preferred path towards life with less distress, or completely free of it.

Fear of the unknown is very common and is probably why most people are reluctant to start therapy. If you are struggling with feeling overwhelmed, worried for the future or feeling down and depressed then I encourage you to take the step to find a therapist that you click with. Using strategies that we know works is important, but it is also known that the relationship with your therapist is the most important thing in helping you to move forward. I work with many members of the community, and am especially equipped to work with LGBTIQA+ clients. I also have a lot of experience working with trauma.

I work with clients across the lifespan in the assessment and treatment of psychological concerns, exploring their origins and the self-limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviours that often keep clients stuck, while building a capacity to experience and feel emotion as pathway to healing.

The way I work is interactive, collaborative, intuitive, and respectful. I work analytically with my clients by investigating how early childhood experiences have shaped current thinking and behaviours. We explore the links between unconscious and conscious thoughts, symbolism, beliefs, emotions, desires, and how they impact daily life. The work lies within the unconscious to conscious links, how one relates to their world, allowing unspoken languages of the body to express deeply felt emotions and thought patterns. As your ‘story’ unfolds, together we work to find meanings, diverse perspectives, and solutions to your concerns.

As a registered psychotherapist with a creative art therapy and pastoral background I work from a collaborative position of care, curiosity and empathy. I utilise a variety of approaches to match your specific goals and needs, facilitating understanding of your particular situation to overcome stuckness. One of the philosophies that resonates for me is, “The problem is the problem, the person is not the problem” (White & Epston, founders of Narrative therapy).

As a supporter of neurodiverse teens and adults, I help them embrace their uniqueness, leverage their strengths, and develop strategies to meet their goals, particularly when managing the complexities of ADHD. This condition can exacerbate issues such as low mood, anxiety, relationship stress, emotional intensity, academic or professional struggles, and daily forgetfulness.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
