Life is busy. Relationships, families, ageing parents, friendships, menopause, ill health, ageing, loss, too much responsibilty, workplace relations and career crises can leave us overhwhelmed, drained and down. No one is educated or raised to effortlessly adapt and respond to it all. Everyone and everywhere has an opinion on what we should do, what we need, how we should respond. How to navigate what we have not encountered before and gain equanimity in the process? Slowing down in a therapeutic space, being heard, seeing mental habits, utilising insights and realizations are built in features of the human inner compass.

As a Clinical Psychologist, I focus on understanding the individual experience of each client. This includes working together to build trust and an understanding of what you are going through, what matters to you and your priorities for positive change. Therapy can then be tailored to address your needs within your individual circumstances for moving forward and coping well in your life.

Hi there. I want you to take a deep breath in- hold- and an even longer breath out now. Well done on finding your way here. If you have done therapy before -welcome back! If its your first time, I admire your courage. Id love to say therapy is easy- but its not. It may very well be one of the hardest things you do in your life. BUT it might be a little easier than the struggle you have been living with so far. You might have come here feeling broken, I get that, but perhaps it is that you are actually stuck. My belief is that effective therapy is largely based on human relationships, so we will start by getting to know each other.

I work from a strengths-based approach to support clients explore their concerns and establish goals to enhance their resilience. It is important that we work collaboratively in this process, which will assist me in tailoring my approach to your needs. I value the individual qualities each person holds and strive to create a non-judgemental and open space to address difficult topics.

I specialise in working with women and LGBTQI+ folk who are wanting support with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and body image concerns. Many of my clients experience stigma and micro-aggressions on a daily basis. Some of the main reasons people choose to see me are because they struggle with feeling 'not good enough', or they have difficulty coping with overwhelming emotions, or they are struggling in a world that doesn't seem to accept them. Some of my clients feel disconnected from themselves and are wanting support to work out who they are. Most of my clients would like to feel safer.

My practice, Making Space Psychology, is committed to choice, safety and connection with a strong appreciation of the benefits of nature. Clients are usually in their late teens through adulthood to our elders in the latter stages of life. You may have recognised psychological disorders, relationship, adjustment and self-worth concerns, existential and climate anxiety or trauma, bereavement or medical crises. You may recognise the therapeutic benefits of nature and want to harness it. If you choose to we can walk and talk whilst undertaking therapy. Just sitting in an office talking sometimes just doesn't cut it!

My clients often question their relationship with alcohol, even if they don't identify as alcoholics. Usually binge drinking and high functioning drinking is the main presenting issue. I provide a safe, non-judgmental, confidential space to discuss their concerns, free from shame and stigma. Their goals vary: quitting, taking a break, or addressing current challenges. Many face depression, anxiety, or difficult life events. Some clients are French speakers - not always coming because of alcohol addiction. Regardless, understanding and empathy are central to my approach.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
