I am committed to ensuring that all clients receive the highest standard of care and a positive experience of therapy. I understand that many people feel nervous about attending counselling, so I ensure that we spend time in the first session discussing goals, motivations for attending therapy and outlining what they can expect from the sessions. I work from a client-centred approach, which means that therapy is guided by a clients’ individual goals and completely at their own pace.

Your pain is real, but what if you didn’t have to live with it any longer? Call Jay and explore whether you may be living with traumatic stress.
Jay works with adults to overcome traumatic stress. Emerging trauma literature suggests that traumatic stress underpins most mental health diagnoses, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar, and borderline personality. Those living with traumatic stress typically feel numb, disconnected, afraid, alone, empty, and unsafe. They are often confused about why they feel bad and frequently ask, “what's wrong with me?” They can be disconnected from themselves, their loved ones, or the world around them, and they often have an addiction they use to reduce their pain. Ultimately, they want to feel safe, but this can feel unobtainable.

Finding the right psychologist can be a daunting task. How do you know if you have found the right one? Will you feel comfortable with them? Will they know how to treat you? I am an experienced clinical psychology registrar, and have treated many people from different walks of life. As a risk-free option, if you have a GP psychology referral letter and you find that I am not a good fit for you during your first session, this session will be bulk-billed at no cost to you.

I work with the psychological effects of significant change and loss in life and relationships, trust and harm issues, trauma such as death, sexual abuse, violence and emotional abuse or crime that affected development and functionality.
I am a partner at Ardross Psychology Practice along with Dr Peter Gibbons. We relocated to Myalup WA in April 2024 and provide online therapy only. We aim to provide residential mental health retreats in a very peaceful, natural bush setting. We invite expression of interest via e-mail. I provide online therapy only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and accept a very limited number of new referrals. Dr Gibbons will operate as normal from Tuesdays to Thursdays.

I specialise in trauma, alcohol and other drugs (AOD) but this is not exclusive of other mental health issues I can work with.
The way I work is interactive, collaborative, intuitive, and respectful. I work analytically with my clients by investigating how early childhood experiences have shaped current thinking and behaviours. We explore the links between unconscious and conscious thoughts, symbolism, beliefs, emotions, desires, and how they impact daily life. The work lies within the unconscious to conscious links, how one relates to their world, allowing unspoken languages of the body to express deeply felt emotions and thought patterns. As your ‘story’ unfolds, together we work to find meanings, diverse perspectives, and solutions to your concerns.

Complex trauma at any age can make understanding ourselves, our reactions, painful emotions, and relationships mystifying. I'm registered with Blue Knot Foundation as a trauma informed therapist. If you have anxiety or depression symptoms, anger or hurt, I have been working beside people who want to manage and reduce these issues since the 20th century. I'll do my best to give you tools to use right from your first visit. If you are in a remote area I can provide sessions via Signal/Zoom. I know a lot about family and domestic violence and how people can come back from what happened to them or even from what they did to others.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
