I am a practiced counsellor, with a specialised interest in attachment trauma. The way our early life experiences create a blueprint for our relationships that may no longer be serving us in our adult circumstance. Unresolved attachment trauma can cause us to repeat the same painful relationship patterns until we go back to the source and heal the original wounding. My job is to build a comfortable and safe space for you to explore any issues that may be holding you back from creating the life and connections you long for in all your relationships, especially the one with yourself.

Hi there. I want you to take a deep breath in- hold- and an even longer breath out now. Well done on finding your way here. If you have done therapy before -welcome back! If its your first time, I admire your courage. Id love to say therapy is easy- but its not. It may very well be one of the hardest things you do in your life. BUT it might be a little easier than the struggle you have been living with so far. You might have come here feeling broken, I get that, but perhaps it is that you are actually stuck. My belief is that effective therapy is largely based on human relationships, so we will start by getting to know each other.

Clients are usually in their late teens through adulthood to our elders in the latter stages of life. You may have recognised psychological disorders, relationship, adjustment and self-worth concerns, existential and climate anxiety or trauma, bereavement or medical crises. You may recognise the therapeutic benefits of nature and want to harness it. If you choose to we can walk and talk whilst undertaking therapy. Just sitting in an office talking sometimes just doesn't cut it!

Complex trauma at any age can make understanding ourselves, our reactions, painful emotions, and relationships mystifying. I'm registered with Blue Knot Foundation as a trauma informed therapist. If you have anxiety or depression symptoms, anger or hurt, I have been working beside people who want to manage and reduce these issues since the 20th century. I'll do my best to give you tools to use right from your first visit. If you are in a remote area I can provide sessions via Signal/Skype/Zoom. I know a lot about family and domestic violence and how people can come back from what happened to them or even what they did to others.

I take an integrated, person-centred, and flexible approach to therapy; understanding and appreciating the varied and individual circumstances that may bring someone to therapy. I encourage curiosity and authenticity in my practice, inviting clients to explore their concerns and difficulties together, recognise their innate strengths and capabilities, and investigate how we may feel and respond to the things that challenge us. I believe we all have the power to heal our wounds.

Emotionally Focused Counsellors
Who is emotionally focused therapy for?
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.
Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?
People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.
What happens in emotionally focused therapy?
Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.
What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?
EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
