My clients may struggle socially, are becoming withdrawn and anxious, may be impacted by bullying, feel anxious about going to school and struggle with sleep. Their grades may be slipping. They may be self-conscious and hide behind baggy clothing. My clients may be wanting support to work through limiting beliefs, learn strategies to manage anxiety and build their self-esteem so they can connect with friends and feel a sense of belonging with their peer groups and or community. My clients just want to feel good enough.

When working with Nikki you will find a gentle, non-judgemental approach to the human experience. Connect with Nikki by Telehealth or in person to curiously explore attachment and development across your lifespan and the narrative and beliefs they create that can block your healing.

Welcome! Each person I work with has their own specific needs and goals. Life has it's traumas for us all. Often, my clients are experiencing a lot of emotional pain when we first meet. I respect the courage it has taken for them to reach out for help. Feelings like unhappiness, depression and anxiety grow in isolation. Feeling depressed or anxious makes people ever more isolated and alone. Sharing your experiences and emotional hurt in a safe non-judgemental space is exactly the right way to break out of this cycle and get back to living a connected, full and happy life. I work with individuals, and couples.

Are you the person who absorbs all the stress and worries within your relationships, constantly giving to others, yet, you often feel like your own needs are not met, or that you are not valued enough. You are not alone! Trying to be there for everyone whilst neglecting yourself can be exhausting but you already know that, maybe that's why you are here. Remember, reaching out for support is a sign of strength, it can help you recognise and work through the reasons why you might be focusing on others and ignoring your own needs.

I support people who feel isolated and negative, to breakthrough their trauma, to experience more positivity in their life. I work mainly as a person-centred counsellor but integrate other approaches when appropriate and helpful. Person-centred therapy is based on the philosophy that each human being is of value and has the potential for psychological change, growth and increased personal fulfilment. I will seek to establish a safe ‘therapeutic relationship’ with you in order to help resolve whatever troubles you, and work toward finding a better way forward in your life.

What I have learnt from my 20+ years in the human services and education sectors and my life experience is that people, no matter their age are looking for a good philosophy that ends in action, in order to help them lead a fulfilling life. Talking and helping people to make sense of their situation is an important part of the healing process and something that is the key focus of my practice. I am here to listen, to support clients to reflect and to gain insight while encouraging people to actively make the choices that affect their life.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
