Are you experiencing the symptoms of relationship distress? Poor communication, high conflict and low levels of intimacy, just to name a few? Utilising the principles of Emotionally Focussed Couples Therapy and Gottman Method, I strive to have couples experiencing new insights into their partners, as well as their own behaviours and attitudes. These insights can become the vehicle to more open, empathic and respectful communication, quicker repair in conflict, greater levels of intimacy, and ultimately more satisfying relationships.

I have 25 years’ experience in public mental health and private practice. It is well established that the most important ingredient for any successful therapy is the therapeutic relationship which develops over time and helps you feel safe. I work with you to make sense of your unique story and the reasons you’re engaging in therapy. I start by understanding your early life experiences which impact your thinking patterns, emotions and behaviours from an emphatic and non-judgmental position. Therapy is embedded with compassion, tailored to meet your goals, from a strengths based position to empower your recovery journey.

My areas of interest revolve around the impacts of early trauma, various grief, and loss experiences and life transitions. Which may impact the everyday functioning of an individual. Having the opportunity to discuss these experiences, the complexities of life transitions and/or unresolved grief and loss and how you have been impacted. At times, we all experience stress, and, anxiety, which can create depressive symptoms. This is extremely relevant at this time due to COVID-19. It is scary, it is unknown territory and we are all going through the same fears. Counsellors can support you through this.

I know how daunting it can be to ask for help when you are struggling, but therapy can also be a highly rewarding and empowering experience. I'm here to listen and to help you manage difficult feelings as we work towards your goals together. I work with a variety of clients, and focus on helping those who are struggling with major life transitions. Many of the clients I work with are pregnant, or in the postnatal period, or are dealing with the demands of early parenting. Others may have lost someone close, or are going through a divorce or experiencing family conflict. The good news is that therapy can help with these issues.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
