My name is Lorraine Marsh, and if you have found your way here, then maybe you are looking for a different way to live your life. Have you lost a sense of your authentic self? What dreams have you let go of? Maybe you have never been encouraged to want something just for yourself? What are your intrinsic values? Would you like to understand thought and relationship patterns that no longer serve you? How can you rediscover what you love and to learn new skills to thrive? When was the last time you thought about what you wanted and took action to get it?

I am a specialist Counsellor with 12+ years' experience supporting women in community and therapeutic settings. Women are incredible connectors that give so much of themselves to workplaces, families and community. Sometimes this can result in feeling disconnected from themselves. Women also experience relationship breakdowns, parenting challenges, loss, abuse and traumatic experiences. These can really rock the foundation of who we are. I can help you make sense of what has happened and how to move forward with who you are becoming and what you want for your life.

Therapy can allow us to get to know ourselves, not who the world wants us to be, nor what the world has turned us into; but the self that guides all we want to be and the self that guides our intuition. By understanding all the aspects of being (mind, body, relational, transpersonal and contextual) therapy can help us learn how to negotiate life, let go of things that hinder us and live in a manner which is more conscious of all that is meaningful to us as individuals. In this way a person can live life to the full, in a manner that is true to yourself, leaves you feeling fulfilled and constantly growing.

As a counsellor my role is to create a safe space for you to explore the issues that you are dealing with in your life, to find understanding, peace and resolution. If you are experiencing frustration, anxiety, depression or trauma from the challenges of everyday life, loss, bereavement, the end of relationships, or abuse, I am comfortable sitting with you and quietly exploring the emotions and thoughts which arise. I intentionally keep my fees affordable, so that cost isn't a barrier for people to access help.

I like to focus my clinical work on helping my clients work out what’s preventing them from getting on with what they want to achieve in life, and supporting them as they overcome those obstacles. Whether they're dealing with a clinical diagnosis like depression or anxiety, unhealthy relationship patterns or severe situational stresses. I strongly believe that whatever a client wants to work on, a trusting and collaborative therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in working towards positive change in any area of life and that's what I aim to provide.

Relationships can bring about significant stress and challenges when forming close connections and bonds with people, or navigating the complexities of interpersonal relationships with friends or colleagues. This can lead to thoughts of sadness, alienation, loneliness, anger, or even conflict. As you go through life, you might notice recurring issues that persist across various domains. You might ponder questions like, “Why do I keep doing this?”, "What am I doing?", “What's happening to me?”, or “How can I figure out what I want in life?” These questions reveal your desire to learn, explore, and gain understanding.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
