My name is Lorraine Marsh, and if you have found your way here, then maybe you are looking for a different way to live your life. Have you lost a sense of your authentic self? What dreams have you let go of? Maybe you have never been encouraged to want something just for yourself? What are your intrinsic values? Would you like to understand thought and relationship patterns that no longer serve you? How can you rediscover what you love and to learn new skills to thrive? When was the last time you thought about what you wanted and took action to get it?

You've dealt with a rough childhood, toxic relationships and domestic struggles. All this can get on top of you and you feel powerless and don't know which way to turn to free yourself from the never ending cycle of abuse and regret. I get it. You don't have to stay stuck there. I guide women (and men) who have been through the tough times of Narcissistic Abuse and Trauma. I understand and feel your pain having experienced the trauma brought on by the highs and the lows of this cycle of abuse and mind games.

Maybe you find yourself eating in response to stress or emotions. You might compulsively or excessively exercise or maybe you avoid exercise all together. Maybe you are struggling with body image difficulties or grief around how your body does or doesn't function.

Hello! My name is Charlotte and I created Being Human Psychology to provide a space for each individual to feel heard, known and seen while exploring all the messy, beautiful and imperfect parts of being a human. I work from a space of curiosity, fostering an environment where laughter and tears can coexist. In particular I enjoy working with adult clients to address past hurts and childhood issues that contribute to long term difficulties, such as PTSD/CPTSD. As well as those experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, grief and loss, relationship difficulties and life transitions.

I help women living in a state of chronic stress to feel better. If you are a new mum who has experienced birth or post-partum trauma or a midlife woman living with high stress and juggling many roles - I can help you. Maybe you get easily triggered and upset or retreat and feel very sad. You may feel awful, but you don't know why. There may be a lot of confusion about what actions you could take as the rational part of your brain goes offline when in a chronic state of fight, flight or freeze and it's so hard to find solutions to problems.

As a counsellor my role is to create a safe space for you to explore the issues that you are dealing with in your life, to find understanding, peace and resolution. If you are experiencing frustration, anxiety, depression or trauma from the challenges of everyday life, loss, bereavement, the end of relationships, or abuse, I am comfortable sitting with you and quietly exploring the emotions and thoughts which arise. I intentionally keep my fees affordable, so that cost isn't a barrier for people to access help.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
