Laura is clinical psychologist (minus the clinical jargon) who values empathy, authenticity, and safety. I enjoy working together with clients to set realistic therapy goals. Underpinned by the power of vulnerability and self-acceptance, I recognise that everyone has their own strengths and qualities. I firmly believe that being human involves facing challenges, but the challenges don't have to define us.

You are here because you feel like you (or someone you know) may need therapy and are reading through profiles of strangers, scrolling through their videos and photos. It's a pretty common part of being on the internet nowadays, along with scrolling through memes and videos of food and cats. You may be looking for connection. Someone who speaks to you and may get you and your life story. I know what’s like, because I’ve been on that side of the screen going through that same process. Today may not be the day you choose to call or email, but you are scoping what’s there and most of it may sound pretty similar profile to profile.

My interest is in working with people who have a history of being in unhealthy relationships and who wish to change this. Clients come to me because they notice a pattern of being attracted to individuals who exhibit behaviours such as abusiveness, control, manipulation and devaluation. This often leads to their sense of rejection and abandonment; and feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Together, we work through factors such as how to regulate intense emotions, tolerate distress and curb impulsiveness. We also learn strategies such as assertiveness, individuation, as well as gaining awareness about the impact of factors such

Do you wonder whether your goals and aspirations have been influenced by society? Perhaps if you were truly living for YOU, your goals would look quite different. Anxiety can dominate our lives until we start uncovering what we truly want out of life. Radically accepting yourself - and understanding your true desires and values - can set you on a more meaningful and fulfilling path. Looking at our issues in a Holistic way allows us to understand ourselves better, which fosters self-compassion.

Psychotherapy is supportive in helping clients move through acute or long-term psychological distress. Rather than symptom-based relief, psychotherapy explores the historical roots of current distress and therefore aims to uproot the foundations of mental suffering for transformative change.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
