Life will go in so many different, and at times difficult, directions with seemingly very little you can do about it. I am dedicated to supporting individuals on their unique journeys through life. Your mental well-being is a delicate and dynamic balance that sometimes feels emotionally challenging. But here’s the crucial perspective shift I’d like to offer: these challenges are not signs of weakness or failure, they are a natural part of our personal evolution, much like the flow of life itself. Working as a psychologist, what I’ve learned is that individuals have incredible strengths that reside within each of us.

With over two decades of clinical experience, my therapeutic approach involves a combination of the modalities outlined below. The underpinning nature of my work comes from an existential perspective where the nature of one’s experience and meaning are examined. Essentially we try to make sense of our surroundings, trying to understand ourselves, other people, and their place in the world. This view of ourselves is created by the influences of time, place, culture, society and family. These influences and experiences help in shaping the character and personalities of ourselves as individuals but also our place in this world.

The two mountains represent the client and the therapist. Both face their own unique mountains to climb, with all sorts of challenges and hazards ahead. The therapist offers their guidance, not from a superior view, but from a unique angle where they may see things that the client is not able to. I love to work with a diverse range of people so as to learn together in figuring out the next steps clients might take.

As a psychotherapist I create a field, I prepare the ground and the conditions, I set processes in motion, I resonate and synchronise with the rhythm of the person. I help the person to centre inside, to anchor in the body, in the present and in reality. What I am most interested in is the relationship people have with themselves. Most problems that occur in interpersonal relationships have to do with conflict within us. My work is about lowering fears, taking small and big courageous steps, regaining the capacity to love, rebuilding trust in ourselves so that we can find and follow our path.

Hi, I'm David, I am a Clinical Psychologist who will work with you in a compassionate and honest way to help you reach your goals. There is no doubt that therapy can be challenging and confronting, however on the otherside of this adventure lies a life of greater confidence, improved and more meaningful relationships as well as a deeper understanding of yourself. I believe that while pain is an inevitable part of life, suffering does not need to be. Positive change is possible.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
