Every hu man-being experiences emotions, but unfortunately we're not always aware of how to hold and understand them.
I work with adults of all ages, from therapy first-timers to experienced clients. My clients generally come to therapy because of some kind of emotional struggle that is confusing and painful. They want to free themselves from this pain so that they can live a life working towards and achieving their goals. Their pain is usually regarding relationships, either with others or with themselves.

Thinking about therapy or changing therapist is a huge first step. So well done for even beginning to look into it. I support people experiencing, low mood, poor motivation, withdrawing from others, loss of joy and interest in things, worries and racing thoughts. I also help with intrusive thoughts and memories about challenging experiences from the past. The medical language for these things include: Anxiety, depression, trauma or PTSD but you don't need a formal diagnosis to work towards feeling better.

Not just manage their difficulties, but recover.
A wish to get better, and a willingness to look inside oneself. These are the only essentials for success in therapy. I enjoy helping people with OCD and rumination to regain a sense of agency over their mind, people with depression to understand what is happening inside themselves that is causing their suffering and free themselves from it, people with PTSD to feel safe again and gain self-compassion and heal their nervous system, people with difficulty in relationships to understand what is happening and operate more smoothly, and helping people with many other difficulties to heal and move forward.

Although his practice sees equal numbers of men and wo men, his specialities are men, couples and communication.
Michael came to study psychology as a mature age student, completing his studies part time at Swinburne and Victoria University during the 80’s and 90’s. He believes that coaching, counselling or psychotherapy needs to be tailored to each individual. This has led him to develop skills in a number of different approaches over his twenty years in practice. Growing up in a Victorian country town in the middle of last century he experienced both the State and Catholic school systems before serving as an officer in the Royal Australian Navy during the Vietnam era.

My work's goal is to help clients reconnect to the vastness of what it is to be hu man and alive.
I have been working as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist in Private Practice since 2011. My aim is to create spaces of trust for clients to explore the intricacy of their own lives, to identify the fullness and complexity of their experience, to come to terms with themselves, and to release behaviour which no longer serves them. My work is Hu manistic, Person Centred and Emotion Focused, and I use the integrative approaches of my training as entry points for us to language, feel, and honour, all that we carry deeply within us.

Although I work with a range of people with diverse backgrounds and issues, attachment trauma, difficulties with interpersonal relationships and men's issues are challenges I frequently work with.
Whether you are new to considering therapy or want to go deeper, I'm curious to hear your needs. I maintain that despite the difficulties in our lives, our systems are naturally oriented toward healing and wellbeing. Challenges through both environmental or internal stressors such as trauma, grief and loss, anxiety, and more complex issues of Neurodiversity or personality disorder are issues that can improve.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
