In over 20 years as a therapist, I have worked with a wide range of clients and couples with many and varied issues. I work in a way that is strongly client, and emotionally focused. I have worked with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, substance issues, food disorders, grief, child-hood trauma, uncertainty around sexuality and gender, around identity and self confidence/esteem. I work well with clients who are looking to change their lives and who are open to exploring their issues; to challenge their thinking and to examine what isn't working for them and to take practical steps to shift beyond where they are now.

My practice is client-centred, open, curious and compassionate, incorporating mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy, attachment theory, somatics and narrative therapy.
In my experience, people don’t always come to therapy because there’s a problem they want to fix. More often, people seek out counselling because something just doesn’t feel right, something has shifted in their lives and they want help in navigating that change. I create sacred space to hear your story so that you can hear it too. A safe space to breathe between the chapters. We are all weavers of stories and I will walk alongside you as you continue to craft yours.

Narrative Therapy seeks to help people deconstruct the dominant, problem-saturated stories that have had a negative impact.
I believe that the stories we tell ourselves shape our lives, our identity, and our sense of 'place' in this world. We can impact and transform our lives by exploring how we engage with our life stories - by learning to tell our stories in ways that make us stronger. Narrative Therapy, to me, is a respectful and hope-filled counseling method that connects a client with their agency and stories, empowering them to shape a different future.

Narrative Counsellors

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds — perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
