I will help you understand why you feel the way you do, so you can find peace, and better manage your life, as it is, as it was, and as you want it to be.
Are you experiencing difficulties within yourself or in your relationships? How do you get through life? Do you feel things need to change? I maintain clients' mental health by helping them better understand themselves and the situations they are in so they can find peace, balance and positivity.

Whether you're struggling with the after effects of trauma, the alarm bell of anxiety or the emptiness of depression, life inside a hu man mind can be painful. If you're stuck underneath a difficult problem or you can't seem to get your life on track, the problem may not be what it seems. We all try to improve our lives by changing the world around us or controlling what we think and feel, but those approaches don't really seem to work, and sometimes the things we do to control how we feel become problems in themselves. If your past looms large or the thoughts of the future provoke a constant anxiety, you've come to the right place.

I seek to support clients who are looking to make positive change in their lives. They may want to move away from difficult emotional states like depression, anxiety, anger and loneliness or address repetitive and destructive behaviours such as substance abuse or sexual compulsion that are holding them back. They may also be overwhelmed by big transitions like bereavement, divorce or relocation and feel stuck, or unvalued, in their professional journey. I see clients of all ages and from many walks of life, with a particular focus on men's mental health, working professionals, and members of the LGBTQ community.

I had a 25+ year management career of my own (including almost 6 years as a CEO) before I retrained as a counsellor.
Senior leaders, busy professionals and creative entrepreneurs need to manage an unprecedented range of competing de mands across their personal and professional lives. The pressure can be relentless, and career success can come at a high cost. Stress can have serious impacts on mental health, family relationships and physical well-being. Travel and work schedules can undermine marriages/partnerships and parenting. It makes sense to invest in your resilience, wellbeing and self care because resilient leaders achieve more.

Once you know exactly ‘what’ to do you will quickly regain control, find your feet, and move forward. I have over 30 years experience helping people and have been a consultant in charge of a major hospital Psychology Clinic. I have also worked in an Anxiety Disorder Clinic, and Family Therapy Clinic. This level of expertise allows for accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment. I employ practical, tested methods. When you are under stress it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you are powerless, and that this is just the way things are. You will start to believe, “I’m not as capable as I once was"

Although I work with a range of people with diverse backgrounds and issues, attachment trauma, difficulties with interpersonal relationships and men's issues are challenges I frequently work with.
Whether you are new to considering therapy or want to go deeper, I'm curious to hear your needs. I maintain that despite the difficulties in our lives, our systems are naturally oriented toward healing and wellbeing. Challenges through both environmental or internal stressors such as trauma, grief and loss, anxiety, and more complex issues of Neurodiversity or personality disorder are issues that can improve.

Often in today's world, we get caught up in so many distractions on the outside that we are not always aware of our internal experiences. We walk around anxious and depressed, with critical thoughts of ourselves and others, and often live a reality that is separate from our own personal wishes and desires. I believe that therapy provides a safe space to step away from all the external distractions and focus on identifying and responding to our emotional world in the most open and connected way, which may have been too painful to do in the past.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
