A psychoanalytic approach is suited to a wide range of people including those experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, grief or relationship issues.
People often come to psychotherapy because they are burdened by thoughts, behaviours, feelings, or patterns of relating that make their lives difficult and cause them to suffer. In my psychoanalytic practice it is through speaking freely, and being listened to with careful attention, that people can find new possibilities with the difficulties and impasses that have characterised their lives so far. My approach does not impose norms of relating, functioning or being but meets each person, one by one, in their unique experience of living and in the context of their history and circumstances.

I have trained in a number of modalities, including psychoanalytic and trauma treatment approaches, and primarily work with people psychoanalytically.
People come to therapy for a range of reasons. There might be recurrent problems in relationships or work, there might be disturbing feelings within, or behaviours that are defeating or destructive. Many people find that their usual ways of coping don’t seem to work for them anymore. Whatever the issue, undertaking psychotherapy is an opportunity for you to really understand the underlying drivers of the problem, in the context of your unique life history, and to find a way to transform your suffering. New possibilities for living with greater freedom and creativity might then appear.

Michael came to study psychology as a mature age student, completing his studies part time at Swinburne and Victoria University during the 80’s and 90’s. He believes that coaching, counselling or psychotherapy needs to be tailored to each individual. This has led him to develop skills in a number of different approaches over his twenty years in practice. Growing up in a Victorian country town in the middle of last century he experienced both the State and Catholic school systems before serving as an officer in the Royal Australian Navy during the Vietnam era.

The people who work with me are often independent thinkers, they're bright and creative. They might also feel isolated, stuck, that there's something missing, or that they haven't yet been heard in a way that allows them to feel a bit freer to really enjoy their lives. Many would say that they feel like outsiders. The people I work with have often had seriously difficult histories. Sometimes they support someone else who suffers. I value working with others of all ages from my LGBTQ+ and GBKS (diversity in gender, body, kinship & sexuality) communities.

We all experience suffering, and our suffering can be intensified by a multitude of factors unique to each individual. We may feel confused about what exactly is causing our suffering, or we may feel we understand it but nevertheless feel stuck in being able to produce changes. I value working with the whole individual and their many complex facets. My hope for those I support is to suffer less and live more fully.

It can be hard to consider coming to therapy… You might be experiencing chronic pain or recurring physical symptoms. Perhaps you are exhausted and you feel like you have already tried everything. Maybe you are worried or overwhelmed by the relationships in your life. You could be trying to understand how experiences in your life are impacting your sense of self, but need more support in this process... These are all good reasons to reach out, and there are many more.

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviours. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behaviour is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
