Heal, strengthen, and reconnect with your own energy to design the authentic and purposeful life you want. Many environments and life experiences steer us off track and leave us reliant on survival modes, unhelpful patterns, relationships or routines. I will use all my skills and knowledge to support and empower you to learn different ways to accept yourself, thrive and build healthy relationships with others. Every step you take to invest in yourself results in an equally powerful investment in those around you. "If not now, when?"

Hi, I'm Danni (she/her). I am a Melbourne / Naarm based psychologist & registered play therapist. I specialise in child therapy, using play to nurture a child’s sense of self. My practice is client-led and trauma-informed, with a focus on building a strong therapeutic relationship. This allows me to focus on the child as a whole, rather than just their struggles. This gentle and strengths-based approach facilitates healing and growth. I have worked in schools and private and public care settings, with extensive experience in a large paediatric working with children who have experienced significant trauma.

Being a passionate advocate for non-directive Child-Centred Play Therapy, an approach which is backed by neuroscience and is strictly evidence based, I specialise in working therapeutically with families of children of 2-10 years old to support their child towards their full potential. I recognise the importance of facilitating parents with their involvement in the child's therapy by helping them to become therapeutic agents for their children. I have a special interest integrating this in therapy with children on the Autism Spectrum and with other developmental issues.

Life doesn't come with a user's guide and all of us struggle at times. In looking for a therapist you have taken a step toward finding greater ease in your life. Psychotherapy is about building a greater awareness and understanding of your patterns in life. This allows you to find a sense of spaciousness where, rather than act reactively, you can make more conscious choices and cultivate a stronger sense of self. If you find yourself often feeling anxious or depressed, held back by past traumas, not living the life you want, or lacking direction, then psychotherapy can offer you the change you need.

All of us go through many changes and challenges in our lives. As we are experiencing those tough times it is good to have someone outside our family or circle of friends to talk to. The talking in itself gives clarity. I have various strategies to help (beyond just talking if that's appropriate) but the journey we take will be one we take together. No magic wand, unfortunately, but all of us have higher wisdom within ourselves which we can access and which can come to our aid. I have had many years of training and experience and bring these to our sessions.

I work in a way that is sensitive and thoughtful toward very complex life experiences of ongoing grief, loss, or feeling stuck when life is feeling uncertain. Many of us benefit from a person to talk to, to consider our own needs or to work through priorities and how to bring change more smoothly and confidently into our life. You may want more time, freedom, to feel heard or to make sense of the 'right' next steps for you. ;You may want to feel you have work that is more meaningful, happier relationships, or to resolve current or past traumatic experiences. I assist people in a range of ways as they make sense of change.

Adoption Counsellors
Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioural or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioural, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
