I support individuals with their mental health, specifically depression, anxiety, substance use, emotional regulation, social skills, identity, self-esteem, and relationships.
I'm here to help people navigate life's complex twists and turns. I love to work with adolescents (15+) and adults, couples, and families, supporting them to understand why they are seeking therapy and to build strategies to grow develop lasting change. My ideal client(s) is a person or a couple who comes to the first session, that's it. Often, that can be the biggest of step!

I have special interests in providing therapy to adults experiencing anxiety (panic or social), often on a background of trauma or difficult childhood experiences, and sometimes with substance use. Finding direction and purpose, overcoming depressed mood, and reducing relationship and work pressures are also common challenges that I assist with. I offer strategies useful for managing overwhelming feelings so that you can have more choice in how to respond to stress.

Society has viewed addiction as a weakness that you are powerless over or a defect of character only impacting those from lower socioeconomic status. The reality is that addiction doesn't discriminate! The TARA Clinic helps busy and successful people to regain control over substance use and addiction while leaving the guilt and shame behind, because we believe that everyone deserves to find the freedom they truly crave.

I have worked with clients with a broad range of issues and with a broad range of backgrounds ( substance use, homelessness, mental health, existential enquiry and much more). No matter what solution each person seeks, the starting point is always towards self-acceptance and increased awareness.

I work primarily with trauma, alcohol and other drug use and behavioural addictions. I work with you to shed the layers of your trauma, heal unresolved wounds, and create a life that you don’t need to numb yourself to and escape from. With lived experience of trauma and substance addiction, I understand how trauma, especially from our childhood, can impact every aspect of our lives. And, how we can easily find ourselves trying to cope with behaviours that become more and more problematic.

Substance Use Counsellors

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
