Hi, I am Kirsi Reinikka, qualified Art Therapist and Social Worker through the Masters programs at the University of Queensland. Art therapy is psychological therapy assisted by the art making process. Art therapy can help with feelings of anxiety, depression, psychological trauma, finding insight, goal setting, relaxation to name a few. I currently provide art therapy for private as well as self- and plan-managed NDIS clients. Just make an enquiry if you need a therapist under the Redress or other schemes. If you have 2-4 people who would like to get together and create their own 2 hour art therapy group, I might be able to help!

Hi! I am Charmaine, thanks for stopping by. Are you feeling stuck? Can’t move forward? Either living in the past, hating the present or wishing for a different future? Life is tough, and sometimes we all need a little help, but finding the right person to support you is essential. For the last 10 years, I have been working with individuals to clear the patterns of the past, helping them get unstuck and move forward into the future. I work with both conscious (talk therapies) and sub-conscious (experiential therapies) to find resolution, finding the unique therapy that best suits you and your circumstances.

Your life, and your feelings matter. I can give you a safe, confidential space to be heard, accepted, and understood. You get to tell your story and talk about your struggles at your own pace, and together we can work towards greater clarity and resolutions. In our sessions I draw partly on my own lived experience. I have insight into trauma, workplace stress, high-functioning autism and supporting a family member with dementia. I also have 25 years experience working with children and their families. These assets give me empathy and a deep understanding of a wide range of others' personal experiences.

Having spent many years in working with people recovering from natural disasters in Queensland, I understand that very often, it is the ‘straw that breaks the camel’s back’ that will bring a person into the counselling room. Having said that, some may enter the counselling environment looking for personal growth, while embarking on a new season in life. While others may be looking to find solutions to a problem, heal a troubled relationship, overcome anxiety or depression, or perhaps the time has come to work through past hurts, traumas or grief that are still impacting.

I enjoy helping clients who are experiencing life challenges and are stressed. It is rewarding to journey with clients as they take the initial step acknowledging they need help then be willing to look deeply within themselves as they learn ways to cope. My clients want to lead more satisfying and healthy lives, enjoy happier and more harmonious relationships (at home or work), and fulfil their potential. I help my clients achieve greater inner calm, resilience, health and wellbeing, and personal goals, so they enjoy their life, love and appreciate who they are, get off autopilot default mode, and be a positive force in the world.

Are you stuck in a spiral of overthinking, or anxious, self-critical, confusing thought loops that just won't give you a break? You might also feel aware that you are more sensitive than others. Perhaps you're very hard on yourself, even though you know how much this approach exhausts and isolates you. But what if there was another way? I can help you to gently explore your experience to find clarity. And over time, you can develop an inner "compassionate self" to rely on, one who will care for you in a kind, wise way.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
