I specialise in working with couples, and those experiencing stress and mental health challenges (including drug/alcohol issues). Hello and welcome! My name is Fiona and I have been a counsellor and psychotherapist for 10 years. Our journey through life often doesn't go to plan and we sometimes feel 'derailed' from our desired path. Things may feel unbalanced and unworkable, resulting in great distress and difficulty. With a warm, empathetic and collaborative style, I support clients to identify and work on problematic thoughts, beliefs, feelings and behaviours. Building a strong therapeutic connection is critical to this process.

Are you seeking support with: anxiety; depression; sleep issues, relationship challenges; recovery from trauma (childhood abuse/neglect, sexual violence, intimate partner violence); sexuality/intimacy issues; or pregnancy, birth, or postnatal challenges? Are you wanting to be more compassionate towards yourself and reclaim an authentic life that’s aligned to your values? I work with women/folks who are seeking an integrative, holistic (body/mind/spirit) approach to therapy and who are curious about exploring trauma-informed, mindfulness, somatic (body-based) and creative methods of healing.

Many of us come to a time in our lives when we know we want things to be different. We may be tired of suffering and struggling, but need support to move forwards. I enjoy working with adults and older adolescents to help you identify your strengths, learn healthy coping strategies, heal from past and present difficulties, and live a life that feels rich, meaningful and happy. I also have a strong interest in cultivating and teaching mindfulness, which I see as a profound way to enhance psychological resilience and feelings of happiness and contentment for a broad range of people – including myself!

I am an experienced counsellor who has a person-centred and strength-based approach to therapy. My focus is on getting to know and understand who my clients are and providing them with the space that is free from judgment and offers thema space for connection and honesty. Most of us do not often have the opportunity to be truly heard and listened to. In my experience, once a person is offered that space, they are able to see more clearly their own path and way out of situations that they find themselves in.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
