The shock of a frightening medical diagnosis, significant loss, or other traumatic event in our lives can severely overwhelm our nervous system leaving us feeling fearful, anxious, panicky, unable to relax or sleep, emotional and very reactive to everyone around us. It is an awful place to find ourselves in and as humans we often try to avoid or distract ourselves from these unpleasant thoughts, feelings and emotions as best we can in an attempt to cope. Some of the behaviours we may use to bring short term relief, may be harmful to us in the long term, impact on our relationships, lead to depression or reduce our quality of life.

We can meet the needs of both children, teens and adults with evidence based approaches in a safe environment where you feel heard. We currently have immediate availability for children and teens. Our Director created Nurturing Minds due to the need for a less clinical environment and more equality in the typical patient/expert dynamic. After-all, therapy is a collaborative process and the rapport you have with your Psychologist is the strongest predictor of treatment success.

Over 10 years of running a family business while managing a family. Like many, I can say the balance between doing whatever it takes to provide for those we love and maintaining a healthy relationship can be challenging. For this reason, I became an accredited counsellor and established Halcyon to help people by providing tools and clarity to move forward as a healthy and happy individual and family.

It's exhausting to keep trying to act like you've got it all together, all the time. Perhaps you feel like you've just been surviving through life, yet never really thriving? Perhaps you've been through traumatic life events, illnesses, cycles of break ups and burn outs, and even experiences of therapy that felt like it helped at the time but the gains quickly dissolved as life's general chaos crept back in. I'd like to help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself, your struggles and together we will safely 'untangle' the knots that keep you stuck. www.timetountangle.com.au

As well as typical talk therapy, I utilise non-verbal, creative interventions to enable the expression of feelings, emotions and thoughts through drawing or using miniatures during sessions. This helps to communicate relevant issues and enhance self-understanding, self-development and healing when finding the right words is simply too difficult.

Life can be hard at times, and when we meet the messy moments it can feel isolating, overwhelming, and hopeless. We are human, after all. It makes sense that we may find ourselves stuck at times - stuck in our feelings, thoughts, and behaviours and it can be tough to shift things in the right direction, especially if we are doing it on our own. With honesty and compassion, therapy is a place to explore what you're navigating and create sustainable change that supports your healing and growth. I support women who are wanting to shift out of survival mode so they can feel grounded, confident, and free.

20 years experience as psychologist. Clinic located at Flaxton (near Montville). Want to try something different from the usual talk therapy. I still do that as well, but I also work with your unconscious mind to assist with new habit development and to let go of past learnt behaviours. Specialize in Gambling Addiction and Alcohol Addiction. The ability to understand your own story and being able to share that with others in whatever form that takes is what I consider to be aligned to the path of finding your true purpose.

If you're looking for a run of the mill counsellor or mental health professional to assist with your mental health queries, feel free to contact one of my very capable colleagues. I look at life through a different lens, with a transpersonal -even spiritual- mindfulness-based filter. Expect to see life from a broader perspective, while still being very practical. Expect to work from the inside out: YOU will change, and then your circumstances will. Understanding how you (and your brain) operate will help you manage your emotions and behaviour more effectively. This, in turn, will make you less sensitive to (negative) emotion-shifts.

As an Educational Psychologist, I embrace the challenges and unique dynamics of rural communities. I recognise the resilience and interconnectedness that define these areas. My passion lies in bridging educational gaps and supporting students, educators, and families. In rural practice, relationships matter deeply. I prioritize trust-building and active listening. Beyond academics, I consider emotional well-being, family dynamics, and community ties. By collaborating with local services, I aim to create a safety net that nurtures the whole child. As an advocate, I champion better mental health services and educational resources.

I am a Clinical Psychologist and work from a psychoanalytical framework. I typically work with adults (16+ years) for long term therapy but also practice short-term, solution focused, insight driven therapy if time is limited. In this approach, the emphasis of treatment is about working to understanding the roots of the problem, not just dealing with the symptoms. This leads to lasting change.

Men struggle to open up about whats troubling them. How do I know? Because I bottled my own troubles up for 30 years! Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, anxiety and burnout are all challenges I've worked through since I was 8 years old. I've learned through my own journey, that bottling things up doesn't help; and through Mindful Men, I aim to inspire men to open up, get the help they need, and live a life full of hope, purpose and joy.

I have been working in the fields of family therapy and stress-related disorders and conditions for more than twenty-two years, since being an army chaplain both in the South African and Australian Defence Forces during times of military conflict (I served for extensive periods on the front lines of battle and experienced the horrors of traumatic incidents, death, loss, brokenness, anger and excessive aggression behind retaliation on the front line). Touched by the distress of those around me, I realised that we have to be proactive and therefore intentionally develop sustainable resilience before facing extreme distress!

Search for nearby psychologists or counsellors by inputting your city, suburb, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the Australian Counselling Association and the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia. Psychologists must be registered in the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Most Social Workers listed in the directory are members of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for social workers, psychotherapists and counsellors in Australia, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in Australia.

Psychologists have earned a 4 year undergraduate degree in psychology and have completed a postgraduate internship or postgraduate degree. Psychotherapists generally have an undergraduate degree in a health related field in addition to 3-4 years of specialist training in psychotherapy and a period of personal psychotherapy. In order to belong to a professional organisation such as the ACA or PACFA, counsellors and psychotherapists are required to have completed a certain level of AQF qualifications and/ or an approved training course as well as clinical and supervision hours. Social Workers registered with the AASW are required to have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited institution.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Australia could be between $100 and $250. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The Better Access Scheme is a government program offering Medicare rebates for mental health care. To access the program you will need to be assessed and diagnosed by your GP and get a Mental Health Plan. This will allow you to receive up to 10 individual sessions and 10 group sessions a year with practitioners who accept bulk billing, with no out of pocket costs for you.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the ACA, PACFA, or the APS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others or when a minor is in danger, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
