I enjoy working with clients who are motivated to make some changes to reach a more fulfilled and meaningful life. Especially clients who are struggling to manage their anxiety and stress, finding it difficult to adjust to life transitions (i.e. starting university, career changes, or relationship breakup), or going through self-esteem and body image issues.

In my psychotherapy practice, I help clients navigate life's challenges and support the fostering of personal growth. Clients may face issues such as anxiety, depression, addiction and AOD challenges, relationship difficulties, or low self-esteem. Regardless of the client, I always aim to create a safe space, whilst demonstrating empathy and unconditional positive regard. I work with clients to develop coping strategies, improve self-awareness, and cultivate resilience, by which my focus is to empower individuals and find meaning and fulfillment in their lives.

If you are struggling with past events, or current emotions, thoughts or nightmares, I can help. If you’ve never seen a psychologist and are worried about the process, try a session with me. If you haven’t yet found the psychologist you ‘click’ with, the one that understands you, I might be the one who understands.

Highly skilled at rapport building, Mary Ann guarantees a holistic, non-judgemental, confidential, caring and empathic service. Each client is an individual with unique choices that are respected. Clients are never labelled and the problem is separated from the client. This approach assists both client and therapist to view the problem as external to the client. The client is not the problem and therefore becomes liberated from it, so that the problem can be looked at, unpacked and successfully tackled from the outside. In this way, clients are supported to discover positive solutions, creating their chosen future and wellbeing.

I am a clinical psychologist and I have a strong interest in working with individuals to cultivate and maintain psychological resilience. I welcome clients who appreciate explorative work and insight-oriented therapy to assist their personal growth and enhance wellbeing. Many people want things to be different in their lives, and very often they do not realize they have been experiencing stress, anxiety or depression for a very long time. They may have thought about, or feel ambivalent, to reach out. With the appropriate support, understanding and compassion, things can change and they can be better equipped to move life forward.

Most of us want to gain insight into the difficulties that limit our lives, find strength and peace and develop a more meaningful approach in life. Feelings of emptiness and meaninglessness, grief and loss, spiritual questioning, entrenched patterns of behaviour, self image, creativity issues, self sabotage, early, midlife and late life transitioning - these are just a few difficulties which can cause considerable psychological suffering and pain. Emotional suffering destroys our contentment with and in life.

Phoebe feels she is privileged to be a clinical psychologist assisting her clients crossing their personal “monkey bars” and see them moving forward. She has a warm, professional manner and is passionate about helping others, with an understanding of Christian values if needed. She empathises with clients’ pain and difficulties. She has an openness to learn more about clients’ values and beliefs. She uses an integrated approach to therapy and is committed to a client-centred approach.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
