I draw from my experience with CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Applied Behaviour Analysis, Mindfulness and Self-Determination Theory.
I focus on supporting people who come from immigrant families who want to be in more control of their own lives and be more self-efficient. This includes if you: 1) want to improve how you feel and think; 2) want more out of life; 3) want to be better equipped with dealing with family, partners, friends, colleagues or new people. So if you want to enhance your ability to manage emotions or your internal voice that’s critical of you, if you want to get motivated, enhance your effectiveness in an area of life or if you just want more balance, if you want to be more self-assured or if you want support with dealing with discrimination.

Feeling distressed about your mental health is entirely normal. Whether you are feeling anxious, depressed, or stressed about COVID, work or relationships, I believe that addressing psychological challenges should begin with developing an awareness of the influence of past experiences on current mental health. My role as a clinical psychologist involves working with you to understand the potentially traumatic origins of your current mental health difficulties. The process of developing awareness through exploring your past and addressing your current challenges requires a comfortable therapeutic relationship with your psychologist.

Are you experiencing a sense of thriving in your life, or are you merely going through the motions every day? Perhaps you feel like you don't have enough time and energy to fully realise your true potential. It's common to overlook moments of actual thriving when bad days seem to repeat themselves endlessly.

I help clients to better understand and manage their emotions and their impact on their behavior and thoughts. To do this I help clients to determine what they do and don’t control, how to manage what is within their control, and how to accept what is outside of their control.

How we feel has a big effect on how we see ourselves, others and our world. These feelings can be frustrating, scary, hurtful or worrying. They can either have been there for most of our lives, gradually crept up on us or come as a result of our current situation. Often, when we are struggling, the most challenging part is not understanding what we are feeling or thinking, understanding why or knowing what to do about it.

Motivational Interviewing Counsellors
How does motivational interviewing work?
Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathises, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.
Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?
Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviours in children.
How long does motivational interviewing last?
Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.
What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?
In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behaviour.
