My goal in therapy is to create a safe, confidential space where you are able to talk openly about your life, without feeling judged. As your therapist, I will give you the time and care to really understand where you are coming from and give you constructive feedback that empowers you to set realistic goals, make appropriate changes and have strong, genuine relationships. In three words I am kind, honest, attuned.

I have a strong committment to the value of life experiences and events, and understand the importance of placing them in a positive light. With attentive and empathetic listening I assist clients to confront and normalise those life events and factors that contribute to depression, anxiety and relational difficulties, and help live comfortably with them. I have worked since 2015 as a community chaplain in an area with challenges in addiction, mental illness, anxiety and depression. I farmed 20 years, 10 years manager of a Educational Christian Conference centre and 10 years founding and operating a software company.

Pain management is our focus. If you have chronic pain, lower back pain, joint pain, fibromyalgia we may be able to help. If you have exhausted your options, we have a new, different pain model and treatment. We use neuroscience and neuroplastic theory, we also use Virtual Reality as a therapy model. Chronic pain is pain that has lasts for longer than three months or beyond the healing time of the event that caused it. We know this is because pain shifts from nociceptive (physical) pain to nociplastic (neuroplastic learned pain). This is why traditional treatments stop working, and a neuroplastic retraining of your brain is required

My role is to listen, to understand and to identify what it is that you seek help with. Our work will be about building an understanding of what is going on internally and externally for you, in particular, the things about yourself that you may not be aware of. As we gain this understanding of you, it becomes easier for you and I to make sense of what is happening within you, why you act and feel a particular way in certain situations and relationships. By understanding and acting on these things, you will be able to bring about change in your life.

Having someone to talk with about how those changes are affecting you, and to support you in building your plans and response, could help in managing the changes in your life.
Life feels out of balance or experiencing significant change? We all struggle from time to time with juggling life's pressures and de mands, and sometimes we find that our life is out of balance - the different elements which make up a fulfilling life are not quite where you want them to be. I aim to support you in finding the balance you seek.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
