Hi, I’m Catherine Nyika, the Founder & Principal Practitioner at The Inner Shine Clinic & I am not your average counsellor & coach. I specialise in empowering women & teens to overcome anxiety, 'imposter syndrome" and "not enoughness" so that they can learn to shine again. I will help you to see the light inside of you that you forgot was even there & teach you the self-help tools so that you can keep that light turned on. You find yourself here because you are searching for answers. Inner peace and confidence seem out of reach & other things haven't helped. You recognise it's time to start to heal from the inside out. Let's begin!

As a neuroaffirming clinician I take a client centred and strengths approach, respecting your unique neurotype and what works best for you! What might we talk about in therapy? Almost anything! Perhaps it's stress, anxiety or depression. Or exploring your neurodivergent identity ( ADHD/Autism), the assessment process (I conduct ADHD/Autism assessments also), the executive functions of the brain or substance use difficulties. Or maybe its parent support (raising neurodivergent kids and/or being ND yourself), strategies for time management, procrastination, emotion regulation strategies or values...the list goes on!

Overwhelmed? I have lived experience and extensive knowledge of the complexities of ADHD, Sensory Processing, Autism, disordered eating & chronic pain. My unique life with exposure to diversity and unexpected curveballs has shaped me into an insightful, reflective and understanding counsellor. My thirst for knowledge, hyper-focus skills and resolve to fight led to me seeking out my own answers surrounding my health. It finally paid off, & I hope it can help you. I am now treated/mentored/supervised and trained by the MVPs in ADHD & Autism & its many comorbidities. I do not refuse vulnerable & complex clients; I used to be one.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioural therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
