I enjoy working with people who are interested in getting to know themselves at a deeper level and are committed to the therapeutic journey. My clients would describe me as genuine, caring and curious. Although diagnosis is sometimes important, I am more focused on the uniqueness and individuality of each client I work with and like to support my clients to have a better understanding of themselves and help them to connect with their own inner wisdom and move towards a fuller sense of wellbeing.

I work with Couples and Individuals. Some of the common issues that couples bring to counselling are; communication issues, conflict, a break down in trust, affairs, mental health concerns that are impacting the relationship, lack of emotional and or physical intimacy, conflict and stress over parenting, grief, the impact of past traumas, transitioning into retirement and new relationships. The Imago Relationship Model facilitates a new way of communication that allows couples to understand themselves and their partners more deeply and bring greater safety, connection, healing, growth and joy.

Do you remember a time when... life felt good, easy and familiar? When struggle, mistrust and that sense of feeling lost in it all weren’t the “norm”? Do those days feel like a distant memory? Hi, I'm Joanne Deaker and I help people like you break free of Good Girl Syndrome so they can unapologetically be themselves and enjoy life like they were meant too. I also specialize in divorce recovery. I use creative (arts therapy) and embodied (somatic) processes to help you get out of your head and into your body so we can go deep, get to the root of your challenges and move them.

Most of us spend a lot of time doing things for others, and it usually means we don’t take the best care of ourselves. Overtime many of us will experience a number of concerns or face unforeseen challenges, such as relationship worries, family dynamics, parenting, trauma, employment or educational problems, bereavement, becoming a Carer or unexpected illness. When we forget to make time for ourselves and take care of our own needs, we can lose our sense of who we really are. If you’re feeling lost or are uncertain of how to make the changes. If you’re feeling like you need to reconnect with yourself and refocus, then I'm here help.

Every person's journey is unique, and I like to understand the background and goals of the people I support to ensure we create a personalised plan for them. I am very experienced in supporting adults, and adolescents and I have a strong interest in supporting people navigating anxiety, grief and loss, PTSD, developmental trauma, and the myriad of life's challenges. My approach is twofold: I believe in equipping you with immediate tools to cope with present concerns, while also delving into the roots of these issues – be it past events, deep-seated beliefs, or coping mechanisms – to pave the way for a brighter future.

Are you feeling anxious, stressed, confused, emotionally overwhelmed? Does life seem overwhelming, unfair, sad, unfulfilling, directionless, hopeless? Do you simply want more from life? You’re not alone. I endeavour to understand what is important for you, which means that I don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach. Using empathy and non-judgement, I listen to understand what life is like for you and to ‘get’ you - what you are thinking and feeling, how the events of life have impacted you, and what you want and need. I create a safe space to be open and real about what you are experiencing.

Divorce Counsellors

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
