I'm a clinical psychologist who works with people who are hoping to cope better with strong moods such as sadness, low mood or depression, anger or if feeling constantly worried, nervous or anxious. Working together we will find out how this has developed and why it hasn't gone away. In this way we can gain an understanding of the issue and develop skills and strategies to cope better right now, and to manage and/or prevent these issues from returning in the future.

What would you prefer? (A) To dwell on your problems and troubles and spend the first three counselling sessions mulling over these issues, or (B) to get straight onto focusing on the solutions that will lead you to improve your life and increase your levels of happiness? I use a modality of counselling known as "Solution Focused Brief Therapy". If your finances or time are limited, this style of therapy may be a good fit for you.

Many different events will impact our lives, most of the time we can deal with them, other times we cannot. A difficult childhood, the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, an illness or accident, a toxic work environment, sexuality & gender, unemployment, the current pandemic affecting our world or just being at a new stage of our lives can cause us to feel lost within ourselves and the wider world. This can lead to anxiety or depression, it can affect our self-esteem and disconnect us from everyone around us, leaving us isolated and alone.

I focus on men's counselling. It's not that I don't counsel women it's just that men have different ways of dealing with problems that require another kind of approach. The Situational Approach says “this person is going through some exceptional event and they need help dealing with it” rather than “they have a mental health problem and we need to treat the illness”.

There are times in our lives when we get that sinking feeling that something is not right. Such moments often follow major life events, such as grieving for a loved one, the break-up of a relationship, moving countries, facing health issues or even children leaving home and retirement. Other times, they appear from nowhere. Resulting feelings can be so pervasive that they impact our mental, emotional and physical well-being, creating conflict in relationships and impact our ability to function. They may also start manifesting in one’s seeking isolation, inability to see joy in life and can lead to depressive conditions.

While it's natural to engage in pleasurable activities & behaviours, when that engagement becomes compulsive, overwhelming, and out-of-control, the negative consequences can become destructive & unmanageable, especially when addicted to Sex & Porn. We sometimes adopt these behaviours as a means of gaining momentary relief from any pain, anxiety, or trauma that exists in our lives, but regularly feel intense shame and despair after acting out sexually. Then, shame & isolation serve to maintain the addictive cycle, as the problem becomes more complex & often impacts our intimate partner. Don't despair: Help and recovery is available!

Life has its challenges at times, and there can be a great need to talk about some issues. We may feel uncomfortable talking to family and friends about things like grief we still experience following the death of a significant person many years ago, or abuse we’ve suffered in our childhoods. We may have grown up in a volatile and stressful family environment with unsupportive or even punitive parents, and the prospect of expecting or having a baby ourselves is making us feel anxious or depressed. We may have been struggling with weight issues or sleep problems for too many years, or are haunted by disturbing dreams.

Is your mental health impacting you at home or at work? I am here to help. In my therapy work, I hear that my clients are seeking: practical tools and techniques; improvement in their mood; techniques to manage stress and anxiety; freedom from negative mindsets; and a Psychologist who can support them to manage their mental health challenges both at home and at work. In short, they are seeking to return to good mental health, and to thrive in both their personal and professional lives. My experience working as a Psychologist, HR professional, and a Leader enables me to support people to be their best both at home and at work.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
