Hi, I'm Julia. I use anti-oppressive and non-pathologising approaches to counselling. This means I work with you to explore how you make sense of your life and experiences. I am deeply informed by social justice and critical theory. I welcome all bodies, genders and identities, and work to problematise the privileges I hold as a cis, able-bodied woman on stolen land. My style is conversational, where I collaborate with you to create a space where you can can get a greater sense of your preferences, hopes and befriend all parts of yourself. I approach counselling as a place for genuine connection and meaning-making.

I trained as a therapist because I know the grief, health-related anxiety and depression of chronic illness can be overwhelming. What was going on pre-diagnosis can also need attention. I am available to validate difficult feelings, explore the sense of burden and work towards acceptance and restoring self-worth and confidence. My lived experience is of managing T1 Diabetes from the age of 17. My research interest is the role of chronic stress in auto-immune conditions and my purpose is to be available to those who seek more grounded and settled nervous systems as part of their approach to managing their health.

Sometimes you just need to talk. TRAUMA? PTSD? ANXIETY? I invite you to contact me. You're welcome to talk in depth about whatever is bothering you. It can feel daunting to reach out but please remember that therapy doesn’t have to be miserable! Sometimes, we are out of touch with our feelings because our early caregivers could not meet our needs. Perhaps it was not safe or acceptable to be ourselves in the past. Psychotherapy involves learning to deeply understand yourself. The healing power of psychotherapy can be found in the quality of your relationship with your therapist. You are welcome to contact me today.

Are you looking for a place where you can be listened to and heard in a way that helps you understand yourself more deeply? Do you have a sense that life shouldn't feel so hard, but don't know how to feel better? Know that you are not alone. I understand that as human beings we are naturally self-protecting. Often this means that we attempt to bypass emotional discomfort in an effort to protect ourselves from pain. This avoidance tends to mean our suffering lingers and manifests in ways we have little control over such as; anxiety, depression, destructive relationships, unhealthy ways to cope and even physical symptoms.

Therapy is for everyone. Everyone that has ever considered if there is something in life that feels feels stuck, unfulfilled, or who yearns for something different. Everyone that notices patterns they wish they didn't have to keep repeating. Everyone that feels that the structures of the world around them feel constricting, heavy or confusing. Everyone that has ever thought- "Woah! did I just say / do / think that?? Where did that come from??" Everyone that looks at their relationships with partners or family and wonders if they could feel safer. Everyone that questions if it's even possible to feel safe within themselves.

My practice draws from feminist, attachment and trauma theory, and I use a number of different types of therapies in session depending on client need and what works for them.
Therapy can be a big step and decision and it is important that your therapist is someone you feel safe and supported by, that you are respected and so are your strengths and capacities. I work in a holistic and supportive way working with clients to heal, and achieve the outcomes that they choose. I have worked for a number of years with survivors of childhood sexual assault, adult sexual assault, intimate partner and other violence and also work with those who use violence.

Feminist Counsellors

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
