Modern life presents us with enormous challenges: in our work, our relationships and within ourselves. We are strong and capable beings, yet sometimes we can become overwhelmed, feel that we have lost our way, lost our sense of purpose and lost control. We need guidance and support; someone that we can talk to; someone that will listen; someone that will help us get back on track. We may need help with relationships, as couples or individuals; coping with anxiety, stress or depression at home or in the workplace; self-esteem and assertiveness; anger management, life coaching and mentoring.

At Strong Space, we recognise the unique challenges that men face when reaching out for support and make it a priority to create a safe, relatable and supportive environment for any man who has the courage to reach out for help.
Men are often taught not to reach out for help. You may have been made to believe that to seek help for yourself was to admit weakness or that it would make you a burden. Maybe you don't know where to start. But you've been thinking about getting professional support for some time now, that's why you are here. You know you need help, maybe because you're experiencing social anxiety or an overwhelming difficulty to get out of bed. You might no longer enjoy the things that used to make you happy, or you're having darker, more intrusive thoughts. It's starting to impact your relationships, your work & your physical health.

If you are struggling and don't know how to get back to your authentic self, you are not alone. We all need to be taken care of. If we grow up without this care, as adults we may feel flat and unmotivated, we may find it difficult to make friends, we may struggle to understand and process our emotions, and we may forget to take care of ourselves because we feel unimportant. I provide a space for you to express your suffering so that you can learn to overcome it.

I came to be a Gestalt therapist because of my own lived experiences, and I’m proud to say the person I am today is because I had the courage to seek support. Therapy in my view is a safe place where you can come and truly be yourself, to be seen and heard free of judgment so you can explore who you are and how you are in the world. For me it’s all about the restoration of choice, to choose how you want to live, and my role is to support you through that process. Hu man beings are relational by nature, and it is in the relationship we have with ourselves and with others that we heal and grow.

Having someone to talk with about how those changes are affecting you, and to support you in building your plans and response, could help in managing the changes in your life.
Life feels out of balance or experiencing significant change? We all struggle from time to time with juggling life's pressures and de mands, and sometimes we find that our life is out of balance - the different elements which make up a fulfilling life are not quite where you want them to be. I aim to support you in finding the balance you seek.

I believe my life experiences have enabled the development of insight into the struggles, both personal and social that many people go through.
Today, many men are confused about our role and relevance in society. A clear sense of manhood, is I believe, critical to healthy relationships between men and wo men; men and other men; and obviously men as parents. I believe that my personal experiences are relevant here. Over many years, as parent, partner, friend and colleague, I have learned from my many mistakes and now feel that in a non-judgmental and collaborative way, I have something to offer both men and wo men in this regard. I believe that therapy is the best way to find out about oneself, that we are all unique and that each person’s life pathway is intensely personal

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
